Well done, Shiva Thapa. Our first boxer to get a quota for Rio Olympics.

He came quite close to it at the world championships. Missed out but clinched it here. He is clearly our best bet among men and needs to be given all the required exposure to aim at a medal at Rio.

She (Sarita as well)will get another shot for Rio in the World Championship in May provided they are selected in the Indian team.

He missed out a Rio berth but he along with others will get another chance in June in the World qualifying tournament.

Shiva Thapa settled for silver losing to Thai boxer Chatchai Butdee 0-3 in the final. But kudos to him for being the first boxer to qualify for Rio.

Overall, it was a disappointing show by our boxers. We have secured only 1 quota so far for Rio. If one compares with other Asian nations, both Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan have 11 quotas each while China has 10. Apart from them Mongolia (4) , Thailand (3) and Philippines (2) have more quotas than us in Asia. We are on par with Iran and Japan who have 1 quota each.

So, effectively we are now in 7-8 position in Asia which is quite a comedown from 5-6 years back when we were at 2-3 rank in Asia.

It was TKO as French boxer injured (eye injury) though Vijender was dominating at that time ... Still I m not convinced with quality of his opponents ... May be these matches selection for helping to increase Vijender's stock in pro-boxing ... I hope sooner we will see bout against some quality opponents, then only we get real picture about Vijender's performance.

How are the opponents of any pro-boxer picked? Who makes this decision? Just curious!

Generally the bouts are arranged by the promoters. Most pro boxers work with either individual promoters (Don King being the most flagrant example), or promotion companies (eg. Golden Boy or whatever Oscar de la Hoya's company is called). On a smaller scale like Vijender, the promoter is often the same as the person running the gym where you sign up to train.

Boxing is probably the most horribly exploitative of sports, with the middlemen taking a very large cut. Particularly for the lesser known fighters, the purse may look large on paper, but they don't take much of it home.

By the way, for an inside look at how the business of boxing can work, I very highly recommend the documentary "Klitschko" about the early life & rise of the Klitschko brothers. It is one of the better documentaries, sports or otherwise, that I have seen.

International Boxing Federation provisionally allows Indian boxers to compete under the Indian flag in Rio.

The. root cause of this unnecessary uncertainty is hard to digest.Why are the homo sapiens so selfish?

10 Indian women are taking part in AIBA world women's boxing championship in Astana. They are Sarjubala(48kg), MC Mary Kom*(51kg), Nikhat Zareen(54), Sonia(57kg), L Sarita*(60kg), Pavitra(64kg), Meena(69kg), Pooja Rani*(75kg), Saweety(81kg) & Seema(81kg).
Out of the. 10, only 3 are in the Qualification fray for Rio.(those with. asterisk)

Today Mary & Sarita will take the first step in R1.

Update: Mary won R1, needs to win 3 more to qualify.
