Top 10 Indian tennis players ranking prediction for 2016

Post by vatsal323 »

I recently came across a thread on an American Tennis Community Website(one like ours), which had users predicting the top-10 players from the country for the next season. They made predictions last year for the rankings that would be at the end of the 2015 season, for instance. So I was thinking if we could do the same. It'd be fun. And we could see who makes the closest guesses :D

So here is my predicted top-10 :

1) Yuki Bhambri
2) Saketh Myneni
3) Sumit Nagal
4) Ramkumar Ramanathan
5) Somdev Devvarman
6) Sanam Singh
7) N Vijay Sundar Prashanth
8) Prajnesh Gunneswaran
9) Sasi Kumar Mukund
10) Sidharth Rawat

Note to the Moderators - I think it'd be nice if you could make a thread for this and move this post to that thread, as I'm aware that this thread is not the correct place for this thread!

I think it is better to have ranking predictions too for top 10 players instead of just top 10 placing. Then, it will be more fun to compare at the end of the year in 2016.

What do you think, Vatsal and others ?

Please write reasons why you choose a particular place for a player like if you chose Somdev at 200.Mention that why you think so?

Here's my list (firmly without the hat of the resident optimist, but focused on a realistic forecast of what is likely to be achieved):

1) Yuki Bhambri (currently 93) -- to reach 45 (breakthrough to top-100 helps improve serve, and raise the overall game)
2) Saketh Myneni (currently 171) -- to reach 80 (capitalizing on his strengths, including serve and shot velocity)
3) Somdev (181) -- to rebound to 80 (a last hurrah and turnaround from the game fighter)
4) Ramkumar Ramanathan (260) -- to 135 (improves backhand in off-season, and starts progressing on the Challenger circuit)
5) Sumit Nagal (466) -- to 230 (first full year on pro tour, starts winning matches in Challengers regularly and dominates at Futures level)
6) Sanam Singh (279) -- to 235 (better planning of schedule)
7) N. Vijay Sundar Prashanth (382) -- to 275 (becomes a serious contender in Challengers in India and Asia)
7) Karunuday Singh (516) -- to 350 (in his final assault on a successful pro career)
8) Sasi Kumar Mukund (553) -- to 380
9) Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan (429) -- to 395
10) Vishnu Vardhan (488) -- to 400

If the top-4 above achieve what I am predicting, we will deserve to be in the World Group of Davis Cup in 2017. And in RamK, Sumit and Mukund we will have a trio of 19-21 years old ready to compete for the Davis Cup spots in subsequent years.

I would also like to see Rishabh Agarwal there. I'm not too sure he'll get there, but would be a pleasant surprise if he does make it there.

This year's surprise movers (up) include VSP (whose big moves were in January-February, with good follow-up throughout the year) and Sumit Nagal (after August), with Sasi Kumar Mukund showing promise towards the end of the year. KU Singh has had a disappointing year, after some stellar stuff in late-2014. There are always some junior players who make sudden breakthroughs -- and I hope Rishab Agarwal and Ronit Singh Bisht are among those this year.

Rishab Agarwal will still be involved with his college tennis duties next year. So, he will have little opportunities to play pro tennis. I expect Ronit Bisht and Haadin Bava to progress towards top 500 .

I will put my predictions a little later.

These are my predictions -

1) Yuki Bhambri 70 (I expect him to struggle a bit in early stage as he makes the transition to ATP tour but recover later
2) Saketh Myneni 130 (I expect him to have a 2-3 big results at challenger level but still not consistent enough to make it top 100)
3) Somdev 150 (Will recover some of his form but still not his old self).
4) Ramkumar Ramanathan 180 (Will go deep in 2-3 challengers and generally having more consistent results at that level)
5) Sanam Singh 230 ( will become a consistent challenger level player)
6) Sumit Nagal 280 -- ( Will do well in higher level of futures and start having wins at challenge level )
7) N. Vijay Sundar Prashanth 300 ( Will become regular player at challenger level)
8) N. Sriram Balaji 320 (Has a very good serve and will start doing well once he is full fit)
9) Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan 350
10) Prejanesh Gunneswaran 400

Not quite sure of KU Singh's fitness levels and commitment. Else would have put him inside 350 too. As of now expect both him and Vishnu to be in top 500.

As I said above, apart from above, Sasi, Ronit and Haadin to be in top 500 and Mohit/Sidharth Rawat with an outside chance.

I did not consider Balaji seriously because he has publicly expressed a desire to specialize in doubles. The big serve should certainly help with a serious doubles career, but he seems to have decided that 309 (a year ago) was his singles high (he is now #542) and he will focus on doubles (where he has a high of 180, although now ranked 314).

Balaji said that he wants to also concentrate on doubles and not specifically that he wants to specialise only in doubles. That is why I have still included him.

But, I guess he may on his way on becoming a doubles specialist. He has a lot of injury issues which are affecting his singles play but may not affect much in doubles. Jeevan may also follow this path if he does not get much singles success soon.

My predictions -

1)Yuki Bhambri 70 (if his serve holds up at the ATP level to give him some free points)
2) Somdev 120 (this may be more a wish than an expectation)
3) Saketh Myneni 130 (mobility is his weakness but hopefully can find court surfaces he's most effective)
4) Ramkumar Ramanathan 150 (Will fix some of his weaknesses and have more success at the challenger levels)
5) Sumit Nagal 250 (I think he'll follow the RamK path and pick up most his points playing futures)
6) Sanam Singh 275 ( could be higher if he plays a full schedule to take advantage of maximizing point opportunities)
7) N. Vijay Sundar Prashanth 300
8) Prajnesh Gunneswaran 310
9) Siddharth Rawat 400
10) Sasi Kumar Mukund 425

I'm curious to know why some of you are so bullish on 26-year-old Prajnesh Gunneeswaran (now ranked #667, with a career-high last year at 467). Does he have a game with some special strengths like VSP showed this year? Prajnesh's results this year have been pretty mixed -- losing to the likes of Mohit Mayur (who he has also beaten), Jeevan (ditto), Sasi Kumar Mukund, VSP, Ronit Bisht, and of course RamK (but beating Sumit several times). I would say he is in the mix of Indian players competing hard against each other (and the fact that he is training at the Waske academy possibly suggests some upside as well), but what leads you guys to think he could climb so much higher at this stage of his life/career?
