Superb performance by Sindhu at the BWF world championships where she won back to back matches against Olympic gold medalist Yihan Wang & then Asian games gold medalist Shixian Wang to make the SF .
She is probably playing better now then Saina & is probably playing better than Saina was when she was 18. I never thought I would be able to say this about any other Indian player so soon since Saina stormed the circuit few years back. We really are lucky to get another prodigious talent so soon after Saina.
Can she get 1 better here or 2 better ?

According to NDTV, her performance is historic already, ensuring a bronze for India - the first in women's singles in World Badminton Championship. One up on Saina.

And she achieved all this despite the injury last month. The BWF World Championships were really her first tournament after returning from injury.

Congratulations to Sindhu on the Arjuna award Didn't know her father is also an Arjuna awardee, P.V.Ramana was an Indian volleyball player and received the Arjuna award in 2000. What a family

A little while ago Sindhu tweeted that she entered Top-10 in BWF rankings! Good to see two indians in Top-10. Moderators can edit the thread title reflecting new rank which is 10.
[Haven't checked but I take your and Sindhu's word that she is #10. Changed the thread title - Mod, Jay]

PV Sindhu ended a fabolous 2013 with another GP gold title at Macau yesterday. This is a related article -

Nice to know that Gopi worked on her mistakes & she was able to come strong so soon after all those early losses after world championships. I guess not too long before she overtakes Saina as India no. 1.The string of losses was broken only when National coach Pullela Gopichand withdrew Sindhu from the China Open Super Series in November to concentrate on training. "We worked extensively on speed and aggression while at the academy during the preparation for the tournament and she executed it well in Macau," he said.

Another superb performance by Sindhu to reach second consecutive world championships SF and beating world no. 6 and world no.2 on the way. She is the only Indian to reach the world championships SF and has now done it twice and all this when she is just 19 years old. She also has a pretty good record against the all conquering Chinese. She is 4-2 against Shi Xian Wang, 1-3 against Yihan Wang and 1-1 against Li Xurei i.e 50% W-L record against top 3 players in the world who are all Chinese.
Compare that to Saina's record against these 3 players - 5-3 against Shi Xian Wang but 1-8 against Yihan Wang and 1-7 against Li Xurei .
It may be a bit early but Sindhu is aleady showing that eventually she may turn out to be better player than Saina in her career simply she is because she is able to compete with Chinese on even terms which Saina has not been able to do successfully in her career.

What a run by Pusarla Venkata Sindhu at the Rio Olympics. She dropped a game only in her final preliminary match against Michelle Li of Canada (ranked 20), but it has since been smooth sailing against some of the world's top players:
[PQF] PV Sindhu (IND, 10) d. Tai Tzu-Ying (TWN, 8) 21-13, 21-15
[QF] PV Sindhu (IND, 10) d. Wang Yi-Han (CHN, 2) 22-20, 21-19
[SF] PV Sindhu (IND, 10) d. Nozomi Okuhara (JPN, 6) 21-19, 21-10
(PQF refers to the last-16 stage, popularly called PQF by us Indians )

Re: P. V. Sindhu thread - WR #13 May 2013
We have been expecting this for awhile, with kujo predicting today nearly 4 years ago (mid-September 2012 ):
A few months later, I was perhaps not optimistic enough :kujo wrote:thanks for the link. did you see the smash from Sindhu when she was leading 19-16 in the 3rd set?!
Tall, lithe and powerful, she is here to stay and is the single biggest threat to chinese domination in women's badminton; definitely a future WR #1 and dare I say 2016 Olympic GOLD medalist! Just stick with Gopi for the next 4 years and then do whatever you want after that!!
PKBasu wrote:In response to Suresh's question in the other (tournament) thread, I presume Sindhu is on course to be a world #1 in 4-5 years time. Currently, she is only 17 (will turn 18 on July 5th this year), and to make it to top-10 in the world in another few weeks will be a stupendous achievement.
The most exciting prospect is the Rio Olympics, when the Chinese contingent will have to be wary of not just one but two Indian women competitors! Delicious thought!!
