Mr 56 makes a welcome return to the tour after 2 year off. He is playing doubles as w/c at the Thailand Open.

Go Soeda won the $75 K(+H) Bushan challenger & this week unseeded Kei Nishikori upset 3 seeds ( top 100 players) to win the $ 100K (+H) Bermuda challenger on clay.

Soeda is now ranked 128 while Kei Nishikori has broken into top 100 at 99.
This is what I said in this thread in April 2008 (more than 6 years back ). And today, Kei Nishikori is on the cusp of crowing glory as he has become the first Asian man to reach a grand slam final at this year's US open and is actually the favourite to win the title today.

Japan now has 7 players ranked in top 200 and is clearly the Asian superpower in tennis now. Sadly, a few years back we were a dominant force in Asia in tennis but we are no longer are even close to Japan now and only around equal to other Asian nations such as China, Korea, Taiwan and Uzbekistan.

Sameer: It is not as if we have not improved since 2008. Today we have around 10 players in the top 500 -- it is just that the Japanese have done better. What we need to is to have many of these players move into the top 200 and then top 100. But that has not happened -- may of our players have plateaued or faded away after reaching the top 500 (Vishnu, Ranjeet and few others). Our trio of recent NCAA graduates (Sanam, Saketh and KU) have also not shot up the rankings like Somdev did.

I think Cilic is the favorite today.

Yes, Cilic won but still a great effort by Nishikori here.

Agreed that we have added some depth in mens tennis since 2008. I checked the ranking back then and we had 3-4 players in top 500 at that time while now we have 8 of them in top 500 ( and should have been 10 but for the injury absense from circuit of Prajnesh/Vishnu). But, as you said that depth has not gone uptp top 200 level as it should have.

I am even more concerned about junior development. We used to have at least 2-3 players in top 50 of ITF juniors in the period between say 2005 to 2010 and from there we got players like Sanam, Jeevan , Karan etc. who have gone at least ocassionally to top 300 level. Now,depth at that level is narrowing down and we have lone Sumit Nagal flying our flag in juniors. That is not a good sign for the future.

In fact, until 1990 INDIA was the Asian powerhouse in tennis -- especially men's tennis. In women's tennis, the Japanese became a force to reckon with in the 1980s, but we were dominant even there until about 1970 (although this was at a pretty low level relative to the world). In men's tennis, India dominated Asia from about 1930 to 1990. We have had a precipitous decline since 1993 (21 years ago) when we made the Davis Cup semifinal -- and Japan has gradually overtaken us, with Korea and Taiwan having some glory years too. I would say that we are now well behind both Japan and Taiwan, but have pushed ahead of the rest of Asia again (with China nipping at our heels). The pipeline for the future is a bit worrying, but in RamK and Sumit Nagal -- following Yuki and co. -- we should be OK to hold onto the Asia #3 position for the next 10 years. But Yuki needs to have a 9 month period relatively free of injury if he is to fulfill some of his potential.

Kei Nishikori continues to conquer new heights in terms of achievements for an Asian player. Now, he becomes the first Asian player to reach top 5 in the ATP rankings and also the first Asian player to reach season ending finals.Wonderful achievement.

Now, lets see if in future he can win his first grand slam title and achieve a top 3 ranking. He is only 24 and certainly has time on his side.

Asian tennis players are making waves on pro tour these days.

Kei Nihikori retained his Barcelona open title this week. He is the first Asian player I have seen who is so good on clay and now can be considered as one of the title contenders at Roland Garros.

Back on challenger tour, 18 year old Korean Hyeon Chung won his third challenger title when he won the Savanah challenger title on clay. With that he has entered top 100 and is ranked 88 this week. He is only one of the 2 teenagers who are ranked in top 100, the other being Borna Coric of Croatia.

He really seems to be following the footsteps of Kei.

On futures tour, a couple of weeks back 16 year old Korean Duck Hee Lee won back to back titles in Indonesia. He is only 5th player to do that at the age of 16 after Nadal, Del Potro, Borna Coric and our own Yuki Bhambri. :D

Hyeon Chung wins his second challenger of the year at Busan and is now ranked at career high 69 , he is living up to his reputation to emulate HungTaklee as the highest ranked Korean and this weeks Seoul challenger could well mark his third title. An exciting prospect tipped to match Ken Nishikori

Yeah. This is similar to how the Japanese came up with project 45 for Kei. Little doubts that this Korean guy will make it big. It's time for India to come up with project 15 (to better Amritraj's rank, P.S: I know Krishnan was higher but 15 appears more sane :p )

I think that the highest rank achieved by an Indian in the modern ranking era is 16 by Vijay. Ramesh made it to 23. So project 15 makes perfect sense. The big Q is who is that guy?
