India beat Thailand 89 to 65. Next important match with Kazakhstan. Bahrain lost to Kazakhstan today and have Thailand. If they win, can move to next round, but need to play good game

India finished 1 spot below in 11th place.

These are our results after the ones metioned above.

India l. Kazakhstan 67-80
India l. Iran 58-102
India l. China 45-79
India l. South Korea 54-95
India l. Japan 64-73
India d. Baharain 75-65

Encouraging performance in last 2 matches as it seems we were leading with Japan at half time & had lost to Bahrain at the eariler stage. But , those big defeats against China, Iran & Korea who are among top nations in Asia shows how far back we still are compared to them.

Wow, we are incredibly bad at basketball!! The administration of this sport should really be dismantled.

Yes, agree PKB. Those scorelines were embarrassing. And this is just in Asia, whose standards are not very high to begin with. I just cannot understand how Kazakhs are so much better in almost all sports than us. And then Iran, who barely gets to even compete at the international stage in most sports, is still damn good at least at Asian levels.

Indian women had their highest ever placing at Asian level when they finished fifth in the recently concluded FIBA Asian championships at Bangkok .

These are results for our women there -

Preiminaries

India l. Chinese Taipei 57-85
India l. South Korea 62-109
India l. Japan 40-81
India l. China 36-97

India d. Malaysia 74-59
India d. Kazakhstan 65-62

We managed to beat Malaysia & Kazakhstan byt gap between top 4 ( Korea, Japan, China & Chinese Taipei) is huge looking at our scores in the matches lost to them.

So, good that we have come upto 5th but need huge improvement to go up any more.

India created history today by defeating China 65-58 in FIBA Asia Cup at Wuhan, China. Though China fielded its B team it does not reduce the importance of this win given its an Asian level competition.

China had earlier defeated Indonesia 105-37 and India lost to Japan 75-52 in its first game.

Better team? Maybe when compared to our own abysmal standards. It's beyond me how we are not the second or third best sports power even in Asia, let alone in the world. Well, Iran is an exception and is another of certainties in life when it comes to Indian sports (death, taxes, guaranteed loss to Iran in volleyball, ..............).

The team is same as last year, its just that most participants have not sent their full strenght teams. There has been some improvement in India's defence and on court passing under the new coach Flemming, otherwise India is still miles behind top Asian basketball teams in skills and technique.

Philippines has a great Basketball culture, its the number one sport there. They have a professional league in place since 1975, so I see it as quite an achievment given the pathetic state of Basketball in India.
