World team chess championship, Bursa, Turkey

Post by Sandeep »

India beat Turkey 3-1 in the fourth round of World team chess championship to lead the table jointly along with Israel. USA, Armenia and Russia are just 2 points behind with an ongoing game. Most probably they will also join us at the top. India has some tough matches coming up, they have to play Olympiad champions Armenia in the fifth round and top seed Russia in the sixth. Go India

The results (round four): Armenia (4) leading Brazil (2) 2-1; Greece (2) lost to Israel (6) 1.5-2.5; USA (4) leading Egypt (2) 2-1; Azerbaijan (4) trailing Russia (4) 1-2; Turkey (0) lost to India (6) (Kivanc Haznedaroglu lost to K. Sasikiran, Mert Erdogdu lost to P. Harikrishna, Baris Esen drew with S. Arun Prasad, Burak Firat drew with B. Adhiban) 1-3.

India won against Israel by 2.5-1.5 and holds on to the joint 4th spot. However, Russian and Azerbaijan had big wins and leapfrog USA. India is still 2 points behind the 3rd placed team which is now USA.

The points table after the 8th round.

Rank Team Pts.
1 RUSSIA 21
2 AZERBAIJAN 20
3 UNITED STATES 19½
4 INDIA 17½
4 ARMENIA 17½
6 ISRAEL 16
7 GREECE 15½
8 BRAZIL 12
9 EGYPT 11
10 TURKIYE 10

In the last round, US and Azerbaijan fight it out for the 2nd place while India battle Brazil and try to catch up with the loser of US vs Azer for 3rd place.

I was totally wrong in looking at the points. Points are award on match play, 2 for win , 1 for draw. The position itself may not be much different, but India has a very reasonable chance to win a medal. Hopefully, US will beat Azerbaijan and India should easily win against Brazil to leapfrog Azerbaijan. According to Susan, India and US will need a tiebrake to decide the silver medal if US draws and India wins.

The current position, as per Susan Polgar blog is as follows:
Rank after round 8

Code: Select all

Rank	Team Gam.	+	=	-	MP	Pts.	Res.	SB.
1	RUSSIA 8	6	1	1	13	21 0	98,75
2	UNITED STATES	8	6	0	2	12	19½	0	82,00
3	AZERBAIJAN 8	5	1	2	11	20 0	74,00
4	INDIA 8	5	1	2	11	17½	0	81,25
5	ARMENIA 8	4	2	2	10	17½	0	76,75
6	ISRAEL 8	3	1	4 7	16 0	48,50
7	GREECE 8	3	0	5 6	15½	0	50,50
8	BRAZIL 8	2	0	6 4	12 0	21,00
9	EGYPT 8	1	1	6 3	11 0	20,50
10	TURKIYE 8	1	1	6 3	10 0	21,50
Final round matchups:

Round 9 on 2010/01/13 at 12:00
No. SNo. Team Res. Team SNo.
1 5 EGYPT - ARMENIA 10
2 6 ISRAEL - RUSSIA 4
3 7 BRAZIL - INDIA 3
4 8 GREECE - TURKIYE 2
5 9 UNITED STATES - AZERBAIJAN 1

I expect Armenia to beat Egypt. That means that Armenia will have 12 points. I expect India to beat Brazil. That means India will have 13 points. Russia will have a tough match against Israel but Russia will be the favorite to win. That would give Russia 15 points and the Gold, unless Israel can play the spoiler role.

The U.S. currently has 12 points. Unless the U.S. can beat Azerbaijan, there will be no chance for Gold. If the U.S. ties Azerbaijan, the tiebreaks will decided if India or the U.S. will get the Silver. However, if the U.S. loses, the U.S. will be out of medal contention and will probably tie for 4th with Armenia.

Good performance by India in the 9th and final round as India wins by 3 1/2 -1/2.

BRAZIL ½ - 3½ 3 INDIA
1 GM Leitao Rafael 2620 ½ : ½ GM Sasikiran Krishnan 2653
2 GM Fier Alexandr 2601 0 : 1 GM Harikrishna P 2672
3 GM Milos Gilberto 2618 0 : 1 GM Ganguly Surya Shekhar 2654
4 GM Diamant Andre 2497 0 : 1 GM Geetha Narayanan Gopal 2584

US drew with Azerbaijan and ties with India in match points. But on tie-breaker (probably total pts. where US leads India by 1/2 pt.), US takes silver while India takes Bronze medal. India justified its seeding by finishing 3rd.

Final Ranking

Code: Select all

Rank	Team Gam. +	=	-	MP	Pts.	Res.	SB.
1 RUSSIA 9	7	1	1	15	24 0	127,75

4 AZERBAIJAN 9	5	2	2	12	22 0	93,75
5 ARMENIA 9	5	2	2	12	20½	0	97,00
6 GREECE 9	4	0	5 8	18 0	68,50

Good performance by our players in this tough tournament ... If Sasi managed to win against Brazilian then we had good chance of winning silver medal but still creditable performance to won bronze medal.
