Rehan Poncha won two medals at the Singapore open swimming championships. He won the gold in 400m freestyle event clocking 4:03.69 which is a meet record (previous record was 4:04.52) and a silver in 200m individual medley race. He is the only one participating from India. Rehan is also competing in the 200m butterfly event on Sunday. Go Rehan

The competition isn't great as it is a national championship for Singapore clubs but still commendable performance from Rehan (he bettered his personal best by almost a second)

Sandeep, do we have an update on Khade? What is he up to??

I happened to see that Richard Quick (Former US olympics coach, also the coach at AuburnU who we thought Khade might get some coaching from, at one time) passed away this week, by the way. RIP.

Somewhat slow start by Khade in the Paris open swimming which had pretty high level competition mostly from Europe. He finished 22nd in the 50 free and 14th in the 50 Fly prelims.

A little better performance by Sandip Sejwal who finished 6th on the 200 breaststroke, 7th in the 100 breaststroke and 12th in the 50 breaststroke.

Note that these are pretty amazing results compared to India's historically extremely low standards in swimming but now expectations on the new generation are signicantly higher with respect to them achieving close to world standards.

Our 3 swimmers, Virdhawal Khade, Sandeep Sejwal and J. Agnishwar, r preparing and participating European tournaments for 13th FINA World Championships, Roma, Italy, which will be starting from 18th July 2009.

Last week they participated in German Swimming Championships at Berlin ... In that Veer and Sandeep showed they r in good touch ... Sandeep again bettered 50 mtrs breaststroke national record, which he did couple of weeks back at French Championships, 28.77 secs ... Sandeep won Silver medal with 28.65 secs.

Veer won Gold medal in 50 mtrs free-style with 22.96 secs ... After long break veer was back under 23 secs though it was slower than his 22.68 secs national record.

Again very impressive performance by Sandeep Sejwal, this time he bettered his own national record by almost a second, previous record was 1:02.19 ... He also missed semi-final place by only 1.15 secs in Men's 100m Breaststroke.

Vir finished on 57th position in 204 swimmers in Men's 50m Butterfly ... But his timing was 0.07 secs more than his national record.

In Men's 200m Freestyle, Vir's timing was disappointing as he was way below his own national record, 1:49.86 mins ... Here that timing can gave him top-50 finish.

Phelps finally loses at 200m freestyle. A bit shocking but these swim suits seem to really help.

Anybody know what our swimmers wear? It's a bit unfair to Veer (and other Indian folks) if these suits are helping the foreign competetion shave off 2-4 seconds (in a typical 200m race)...

There is a proposal to ban these suits -- don't know how it will pan out though.

The official reason is that they want to get rid of non-textile suits. I also suspect that the real reason is that a non-American company is making these new revolutionary suits -- I wonder what would have happened if Speedo had developed these suits and Phelps was using it.

Suresh
PS: They(the swimming authorities) are yet to come up with a definition of non-textile that has to be applied in the ban!

I think the restriction that the suit has to be from hip to knee (only) for males and shoulder to knee for females (or something close to this) is a good rule. However, banning materials is non-sense and hard. I heard on NPR today that "top-100 international swimmers" have been given these suits for free. Also, there are suits and then there are suits. That is, those that were used in the Olympics are now yesterday's technology and faster ones have been deployed that shave the time further. Now, I do not know if among these fast and faster ones, which of these the Indians have, possibly not the latest. ...
