I don't really know who said she can't beat retrievers in this forum. People like me have continually said the players she will have trouble against are the ones who are more athletic than her with equal or more power. (i.e. williams sharapova henin jankovic ivanovic etc) sania can blow away players she can outhit generally and thats what we've seen against hingis and schnyder types.

Re: Sania Mirza - General Discussion of tennis matters
Nice column by Sania in TOI e-paper :-
Looking forward to playing Serena again
Sania Mirza
THIS has been my first off-season in two years since last winter when I had to play for India in the qualifying rounds of the Hopman Cup in Hyderabad and the Asian Games in Doha. After a complete break of four weeks from the game, I’ve got down to some serious work on the tennis courts and the gym in Tennis Village on the outskirts of Bangalore. It has been fun to hit with the big boys of Indian tennis including Mahesh Bhupathi (my mixed doubles partner for Australian Open), Rohan Bopanna (my Hopman Cup teammate), National singles champion, Purav Raja and Pakistani Davis Cup player,
Aisam Qureishi.
Coach Scott Davidoff of USA, who has taken charge of our camp here in Bangalore, has been of great help in ironing out a couple of things in my game and, having been rejuvenated with the much-needed break, I’m looking forward immensely to the start of the new season, which kicks off for me and Rohan on December 29 in Perth where India plays USA.
Playing Serena Williams (who is representing USA in the Hopman Cup) is always a daunting task and to face off with her in the season-opener does not make things any easier! However, it is the kind of match-up that can get the adrenaline flowing and I hope I can trouble her in our first match of the season.
Incidentally, Rohan and myself are still an unbeaten mixed doubles team, having won the Nationals a few years ago and then not having lost a single match last year through the qualifying and World Group of the Hopman Cup! Last year, we had some memorable wins over the likes of Berdych-Safarova of Czech Republic, Robredo-Garriguez of Spain and Mario and Sanja Ancic of Croatia.
Renuka Pinto has joined me from Florida as the new physio-cum-trainer. She has worked with me on tour when she was employed by the WTA as the official physio and we have a great rapport. She will be travelling with me on tour as my personal trainer and will be helping me in my constant endeavour to improve
my fitness level and to stay away from injuries! It’s been a lot of honest hard work at the Tennis Village these last couple of weeks and I’ve enjoyed it thoroughly away from the hustle-bustle. It’s also been a time when I’ve enjoyed the wedding of a very dear friend of mine in Bangalore.
A couple of days back, my mom and sister, Anam joined me and my dad and we enjoyed a quiet wedding anniversary celebration dinner for my parents followed by a movie with close friends and family. May not sound very exciting but these are the quiet fulfilling moments and bonding with my family. TCM

Re: Sania Mirza - General Discussion of tennis matters
Prajwal Hegde wrote informative article about Sania's planning until March 08 and how much points she needs to defend in these days.
Sania faces points pressure
Sania's schedule -
- The Hopman Cup - from 29th December 2007
- Hobart International - from 7th January 2008 (defending 50 points)
- Australian Open 2008 - from 14th January 2008 (defending 60 points) ... Sania playing doubles with Meghann Shaughnessy of USA.
- Asia-Oceania Group I Federation Cup - from 28th January 2008 at Bangkok.
- Pattaya Women's Open (Tier IV) - from 4th February 2008 (defending 50 points) (Sania playing here instead of Tier II Gaz de France because it’s only 147-km drive from Bangkok where she is playing in Federation Cup.)
- Qatar Total Open, Doha (Tier I) - 18th February 2008
- Dubai Tennis Championships (Tier II) - 25th February 2008
- Bangalore Open (Tier II) - 3rd March 2008
And then she moves to America for playing in all major tournaments in month of March.

Re: Sania Mirza - General Discussion of tennis matters
Sania's TOI column after wrist operation.
Time for me to play catch up again
Sania Mirza
For the third consecutive year, I have faced the disappointment of sitting on the sidelines with an injury in these few weeks leading up to the French Open. Call it coincidence or whatever, but it is surely very frustrating to watch the important tournaments go by while my competitors earn valuable ranking points, forcing me to play catch up with them all over again.
As I have said time and again, injuries are an integral part of every tennis player’s life and as professional athletes, we have to learn to come to terms with this fact. Of course, the cynics would perhaps, jump to conclusions on how unfit we, Asians are in comparison to the Europeans or Americans. However, if one were to closely follow the fortunes of all the top-100 players of the world, one would find that at any given time, there are at least a dozen players, who are out with injury of some nature and each one of us goes through cycles of being unfit during the course of one’s career.
It is therefore imperitive to constantly try to increase the length of periods during which one is fit enough to compete by working hard at one’s fitness. One must also learn to manage the injuries to avoid long term absence from the circuit. As athletes,we are consistently stretching our physical attributes to the optimum and its a fine line that we need to draw in our constant endeavour to remain match fit at the highest level.
My wrist has troubled me for over a year now and whenever I hit the ball late, I would feel a painful stab on impact. The pain would go away after a few moments and I would continue to play. There was a swelling at the end of the game and I needed to ice my wrist to recover in time for the next match. This went on for a few months but when I mishit a ball in the second set of my prequarter-final against Daniella Hantuchova in the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells, the excruciating pain that I felt was of a different level. The painkillers I gulped down had little effect on the acute discomfort and I struggled to finish the match. I had an MRI done on my wrist and the diagnosis was a torn capsule.
The doctor advised surgery although he explained that it was not an emergency. However, I was very clear in my mind that with the Olympics round the corner, I needed to be at my physical peak within the next few months and I decided to go through with the surgery at the earliest convenient date. Dr Badia, who operated on me in Florida, is a world-reknowned hand specialist, who has treated professional sportspersons on a regular basis.
The good part is that though my wrist is in a cast, I can still work out in the gymnasium with my physical trainer to strengthen and develop the rest of my body. By the first week of next month, I will start mobilising my wrist and in due course of time, get back onto the tennis court. If all goes well, I should be back on the circuit by the time the French Open gets under way. However, it may take a few more weeks before I am back to my competitive best.

Re: Sania Mirza - General Discussion of tennis matters
These posts might be better located in the the thread related to Sania's fitness.
Anyway, I read understandable frustration in Sania's writing here. Also, she makes a bunch of statements in paragraph 3 that are basically motherhood. What is not evident in the article is confirmation that the 4 week time frame for getting back to competition that Imran apparently told Jay is going to happen. I did not believe that at the time, and I believe it even less based on this article. The wrist does not heal easily after surgery.
Question - is Sania one of the more injury prone Top 50? I do not have the patience to analyze data on this, but I believe that she is. Yes, players are constantly playing with injury, and a good chunk of the Top 100 are out with injury at any point in time. But how many Top 50 year in and year out sit out a significant period of time missing important tournaments? She had an off season leading up to this year, dedicated much time to fitness, played a slightly less hectic schedule than past years, and still ended up injured in Indian Wells. And different parts of her body seem vulnerable - wrist, hip, ankle, abdominal....
Not sure if there is an identifiable solution to her problem, other some general statement on "she has to work on her fitness."

Re: Sania Mirza - General Discussion of tennis matters
my general impression is that most of the top-50 players have this problem. hardly anyone plays continuously throughout the year. most of them either opt out or are forced to opt out due to injuries.
The bigger concern for me is the fact that her wrist, which has been so critical in her success, seems to be wilting. in the article she seems to hint that the issue probably is with just hitting some balls late rather than her whole action. hope it's just that, as it can possibly be corrected in some way then.

Re: Sania Mirza - General Discussion of tennis matters
I don't think I said 4 weeks to return to COMPEITION, jai. 4weeks to return to mobilizing the wrist. As there is no fracture, ligament tear etc, I think she can start hitting on court fairly soon after. Still hoping to be in playing shape even if not in fully compeitive form by FO time, I believe.

BTW, here's some quick stats i have prepared from the WTA Tour site:
Max. tournaments played by anyone in top-50 in the past yr is 28.
Sania has played 21 matches which is 75%. Coincidentally, the avg. also is 75% !!!
The no. of players having played 90% or more of 28 is only 8 out of the 50.

Re: Sania Mirza - General Discussion of tennis matters
You're right, Jay. My recollection was mistaken. So I guess the prognosis remains the same. Possibly back in time for the French, failing which Wimby is very likely. What ever it is, I trust that she will take the time to heal and strengthen before hitting again. And the fact that she is working out in the gym can be a blessing in disguise. Get those legs, abs and back strong and flexible - would take a lot of stress off the wrist by improving biomechanics.jayakris wrote: I don't think I said 4 weeks to return to COMPEITION, jai. 4weeks to return to mobilizing the wrist. Any news on when Sania will be back in action???
Her name still appears in the entry list of Rome. I doubt her wrist will be ready by then.

Sania Mirza is NOT playing the French Open. Her father Imran said so.

I feel this is good decision by team Sania as they r not hurrying up coming out of injury and taking all required time to rest her wrist.

yes yes
i fully support our little princess's decision to bail out in round 0.
she should save her ailing elbow or ankle or hip or whatever it that is causing her immense discomfort for more important matches - cheerleading for the equally inept "Deccan Chargers" aka DC. I mean geez what an idiot rafa must be to win tournaments with blisters right?
