Terrific. By the way, is Siril Verma showing any signs of improving at the senior levels, or should we give up already?

Give up on Siril.

The boys' winners in the juniors are not very predictive of senior success, unlike the girls.

I went back and checked all the winners from 2008 onwards (Saina's win) - 8/11 wins until 2019 were by girls who turned out great (great = medals at world championships+olympics, top-3 peak) ; same for boys is 2 though Viditsarn is on the path to potentially increasing that to 5.

5 of the boys winners amounted to nothing at the senior level; just one amongst the girls.

Boys winners : Wang Zhengming (steady top-20), Tian Houwei (steady top-20), Axelsen (great), Zulfadli Zulkiffli (average), Kento Momota (great), Heo Kwang Hee (average), Lin Guipu (who?), Lu Chia Hung (who?), Sun Feixiang (who?), Viditsarn (x3),

Girls winners : Nehwal (great), Ratchanok (x3)(great), Nozomi Okuhara (great), Akane Yamaguchi (x2) (great), Goh Jin wei (x2)(average), Chen Yufei (great), Gregoira Mariska (steady top-20)

Siril is 22 older than Lakshya who is 21.He is still very young but I think it basically boils down to whether the players want to focus only on the sport for career or just continue it as a hobby. Last 2 years there was hardly any BWF tour events, even if some tournaments happened they were marred by Covid induced forced withdrawals etc, Now the tournaments seem to happen with some level of predictability so it may take some more time in BWF tour to notice how much progress some of these players made.

Between, after a gap of 2 years China will be finally hosting World tour Finals this December and will require strictest measures of bubble to let players participate. I think players won't be amused to go through all that non sense just to participate!

That is great analysis, Sinhombre. From the boys side batch of 2018 world championships looks great and already doing well on senior tour, champion Thai Viditsarn is ranked 10th, runner up Kodai is ranked 20th, bronze medalist Lakshya is ranked 8th, other bronze medalist Li Shifeng is ranked 30th.

So, if one of the recent world championships is an indication, hope Sankar Muthusamy is headed to at least top 20 in 3-4 years time. Beyond that difficult to predict.

It sounds like hoping for a top-20 is not too bad, and has a pretty decent chance to happen. Great. Always nice to see young names coming up like Sankar. I read that a girl is currently the under-19 world number-1? Tasnim Mir from Gujarat, right?

Both lost in SF against higher ranked players. Srikanth lost in straight games against Ginting from Indonesia while Treat Gayatri missed a great opportunity beat 8th seeded Thai pair as they were leading 18-15 in third game and lost 6 straight points.

Still, I would say a good tournament for Tresa-Gayatri and Malvika Bansod who reached QF in women's singles.

Badminton Junior C’ships: Dhruv, Unnati, Anmol march into under-17 pre-quarterfinals

Nonthaburi [Thailand], November 30 (ANI): Young Indian shuttlers Dhruv Negi, Unnati Hooda and Anmol Kharb marched into the U-17 singles pre-quarterfinals of the Badminton Asia U-17 & U-15 Junior Championships 2022 after registering contrasting victories in Nonthaburi, Thailand on Wednesday.

While fifth-seed Dhruv, who hails from Uttarakhand, fought hard against Thailand’s Panya Phutthiphraisakul during his 21-14, 17-21, 21-15 win in the men’s category, top-seed Unnati and Anmol had easy outings in the women’s section, as per a press release from Badminton Association of India (BAI).

Unnati wrapped up the match 21-7, 21-11 against the Indonesian shuttler Dea Nur Fadilla. Haryana-born Anmol too secured a confident 21-12, 21-19 win over Thailand’s Ratnacha Sompoch.

Neer Nehwal was the lone Indian shuttler to end up on the losing side in the U-17 category. He gave his all before conceding a 21-11, 9-21, 19-21 loss to Japan’s Kazuma Kawano in the hard-fought men’s singles round-of-32 contest.

In the U-15 singles, Mohammad Ali Mir, Ishita Negi and three other Indians progressed into the round-of-32 on the second day of the tournament.

Mohammad Ali and Gnana Dattu secured easy straight sets victories against Thailand’s Paramat Pumleng and Hong Kong’s Cheung Sai Shing by 21-16, 21-18 and 21-11, 21-13 respectively in the men’s category. Anish Thoppani, on the other hand, recovered well in time after losing the second set to finish the match in his favour by 21-14, 18-21, 23-21 against ninth-seed Maharishiel Gain of Indonesia.

Among women, fifth-seeded Ishita thrashed Lada Na Nakorn of Thailand by 21-9, 21-12 whereas Sampriti Pal outperformed Japan’s Ria Haga in a 21-16, 21-16 win.

Abhinav Garg, Suhasi Verma and Tanvi Sharma suffered defeats in the U-15 section.

Meanwhile, in the U-15 men’s doubles opening round match, India duo of Bjorn Jaison and Aathish Sreenivas PV beat Sri Lanka’s Mihila Jayaweera and Janeesha Sethuhewa by 21-18, 21-17.
