Yes, they are quite talented. There are also a few other boys too, I think. Not too much talent coming thru on girls side it seems at the moment.

Hopefully, Sindhu's performance at Rio will spur them on. Gopichand said in an interview there is a flood of youngsters who are flocking to his academy saying that they want to win a medal in 2020 Olympics.

Chanced upon an article by Aditi Mutatkar which explains the issues that a top-100 badminton player faces. Fits very well in the ongoing discussion on prize money in badminton.

What the heartbreaking story of an angry athlete on a medal podium tells us about Indian sport

Sourabh Verma has reached the final of the Chinese Taipei grand prix this week.

These are his results this week-

At Chinese Taipei Masters, Grand Prix

[R1] Sourabh VARMA (IND,82) d. Yi-Hsiang YANG (TPE,224) 12-10 11-3 11-5
[R2] Sourabh VARMA (IND,82) d. (7) Hashiru SHIMONO (JPN,101) 11-6 8-11 12-10 11-3
[R3] Sourabh VARMA (IND,82) d. Ryotaro MARUO (JPN,336) 11-6 11-8 11-6
[QF] Sourabh VARMA (IND,82) d. Kento HORIUCHI (JPN,773) 7-11 11-1 11-3 11-7

[SF] Sourabh VARMA (IND,82) d. (1) HSU Jen Hao (TPE,22) 11-4 11-7 11-9

Excellent win in the SF over the local top seed.

A few other lower ranked Indians played here including Sourabh's brother Sameer Varma. But, all of them lost early.

Next,

[F] Sourabh VARMA (IND,82) vs. Daren LIEW (MAS,106)

Btw, BWF are experimenting with 11 point best of 5 games format in this tournament.

Sourabh won the title in Chinese Taipei.

At Chinese Taipei Masters, Grand Prix

[F] Sourabh VARMA (IND,82) d. Daren LIEW (MAS,106) 12-10 12-10 3-3 retd.

Sorabh was ranked in 30's for a couple of a years between 2013 and 2014 but fell outside top 100 due to injuries, I think. He is making his way back up the ranking now. 2 International series runner up finishes and now this grand prix title within a span of month or so.

15 year old Lakshya Sen who became world #1 junior just a couple of weeks back, has stunned H.S. Prannoy and Harsheel Dani to reach senior national final this week at Patna.

He will play against Saurabh Verma in the final.

If he wins he will be the youngest ever senior national champion. This kid looks an exciting talent and trains at Prakash Padukone academy . This is what Prakash thinks of him -

There are shades of a young me in Lakshya: Prakash Padukone

Good news to see a new talent emerge from outside Gopi's circle. We need more of this for us to make further progress in badminton.

Gopi's daughter Gayatri (who just turned 14 less than a fortnight ago) won the International Junior Grand Prix under-15 title in Jakarta today. Definitely another one to watch.

We have a steady stream of young talent coming through in singles for both sexes.

It would be good to have some doubles players coming through as well.

Yes, more talent coming thru on mens side than womens side. We have 6 players in top 50 of which only Ajay Jayaram is above 25. Srikanth, Praneeth, Prannoy and Verma brothers are all below 25 and are quite talented. Among women we have only Saina and Sindhu in top 50 with Saina being on the older side. There are 20 year olds - Rituparna Das and Ruthvika Shivani ranked between 50 and 75 but frankly they do not look like being top 10 material although I would be glad to be proven wrong. So, we need some fresh bright talent on womens side and hope Gopi's daughter is one of those coming along.

In doubles, since Jwala-Ashwini duo spilt, we did not have a top 10 pair. Currently our best ranked pair is 14th ranked Pranav Chopra and Sikki Reddy. The one who is being talked about as next big thing is 17 year old Satwik Sairaj Ranik Reddy. Along with 20 year old Chirag Shetty, they are already ranked 42 and along with 21 year Maneesha they are ranked 70. Both these rankings will improve this week after a win each in Singapore Super series. Hopefully, in next couple of years these pairs will get to top 10 level.

sameer, I was thinking more on the lines of Siril Verma and Lakshya Sen on the boy's side and Aakarshi Kashyap and Gayatri on the girls' side. As well as Satwik who has shown a lot of promise in the junior ranks.

All our men have been ranked in the top 50 (even top 30 for some of them) for years now and only Srikanth ever managed to break into the top 10. Kashyap for a while got to #7 but was never a sustained top 10 player.

While there is a clear uptick in big performances (including Sameer Verma, we have had 3 SS finalists in the last 6 months now), I am not optimistic enough to expect them to suddenly become consistent.

Ashwini Ponappa and Siki Reddy are making good progress in women's doubles. Similarly, Ashwini with Sumeeth Reddy in mixed doubles.

Aditya Joshi showed a lot of promise but seems lost now.
