Re: Indian Badminton Thread ...
Terrible outing at world junior mixed where we lost to every decent team in Japan, Taiwan and England.

Re: Indian Badminton Thread ...
World Juniors this week but given our terrible performances in the mixed team event, we shouldn't expect a lot.

Re: Indian Badminton Thread ...
Not a single QF-ist in any of the 5 events.
Indian badminton is officially in tatters.
Sindhu's gold is papering over the cracks, and Gopi's fiefdom needs to be broken.

Gopi's fiefdom needs to be broken by good old competition. Let someone else start another academy and bring up great players and then it will be broken automatically.

Re: Indian Badminton Thread ...
There have been complaints that competition is impossible since Gopi is also the national coach and national selector. Anyone from other academies is excluded.

Re: Indian Badminton Thread ...
This is the type of conflict of interest that has to be broken up. The cricket folks have gone overboard and got some useless people but in principle that is a good policy. And, in the long run, I hope it will bear dividends. The problem is that we do not have any qualified coaches. Our coaches should be sent to take up jobs in neighboring countries and the ones that do well should be brought back.
Gopi may be the national coach and national selector. However, people like Lakshya Sen came up from another academy. So, beat Gopi's wards in the national tournament and then make some noise.

Re: Indian Badminton Thread ...
Does he really train anyone these days or he's just a brand now? I think because of his brand all good players flock to his academy. So it is difficult to beat his players also. But I think BAI should ensure that there is no conflict of interest.

Re: Indian Badminton Thread ...
My point is that he may be a brand but he worked very hard and did unprecedented things to be that brand. Let someone else do the same and be the brand.
I have already said that conflict of interest should be removed though.
Also, I hear complaints about him but all of this is hearsay without much substance it seems. It may be true. But, we need to know what exactly Gopi is doing and what is unethical. The media should do an expose' if indeed he is getting into unwarranted nepotism.
However, as Saniafan said, he gets the best talents because he worked hard to build his academy and the best talents then get on to be the best in the country. There is nothing wrong there. And, if a Lakshya Sen comes along, he is getting his dues.
If there is a specific untoward action, we should discuss specifics and not tar him. I do not know if he is innocent or not but the conversation needs to be more substantial. For now, ask him to choose. National selector+coach or head of his academy.

I had no intention to tar him. He has done great service for India. But that does not mean that he should not we evaluated for the results. But the main culprit is BAI. They should ensure that there is no conflict of interest.

Agree with saniafan.
I have said before that Gopi is arguably the most deserving Dronacharya award winner.
However, coaching methods need to evolve with time and there is little evidence of that.
The conflict of interest is something that needs resolution, but that's a no-brainer to everyone except BAI and Indian sports media.

Re: Indian Badminton Thread ...
All three of us have said that the conflict of interest should be resolved.
It is true that coaching methods should evolve. However, is there anyone better than Gopi? I am not so sure. Who has proposed what and when were they stymied by Gopi from implementing their ideas? I would want to know specifics before blaming things on him. He deserves the blame for not being able to adapt and fix things that ail us but TINA it seems.

Re: Indian Badminton Thread ...
You mean in the world? Why should we restrict to Indian coaches. There is money to be made in Badminton as proven by Sindhu. So we should have money to attract best in the world. Again nothing against Gopi but we should keep our eyes and options open.

Re: Indian Badminton Thread ...
Absolutely. We should try to get the best coaches in the world. Is the BAI doing that? Do they have the money?

Re: Indian Badminton Thread ...
They got Mulyo Handoyo and the men were playing their best badminton especially Srikanth, Prannoy and Sameer Verma but then lost him to Singapore.
Kim ji-hyun had an instant impact on Sindhu but she is gone now as well for personal reasons.
Hard to find someone willing to move to Hyderabad and work in Gopi's academy.

Re: Indian Badminton Thread ...
We should give them independence. This sort of capturing the whole infrastructure and system is BS.
