Re: All England Open 2023
Great start for us in men's singles. But how the heck is Lakshya Sen ranked only 19th in the world. Didn't he win the Indian Open last year (he did, beating the world champion in the final) after making the final of the world championship earlier?

Re: All England Open 2023
He won the Indian Open more than a year ago. Those points have dropped off. This year he lost early. Of late he hasn't been doing very well.

Re: All England Open 2023
So, we get 3 out of 3 wins in mens singles after Srikanth wins in 3 games dominating the third game. Sindhu had her third consecutive first round loss this year though. She really seems to be struggling with something this year, maybe some injury.
In doubles, an excellent upset win by Tresa-Gayatri against 7th seeded Thai pair beating them first time in 5 matches and Satwik-Chirag start with a win against a fellow Indian pair.
[R1] Kidambi Srikanth (IND,22) d. Toma Junior Popov (FRA,25) 19-21 21-14 21-5
[R1] PV Sindhu (IND,9) l. Zang Yi Man (CHN,17) 17-21 11-21
[R1] (6) Satwiksairaj Rankireddy (IND) / Chirag Shetty (IND,6) d. Krishna Prasad Garaga (IND) / Vishnuvardhan Goud Panjala (IND,37) 21-13 21-13
[R1] Treesa Jolly (IND) / Gayatri Gopichand (IND,17) d. (7) Jongkolphan Kititharakul (THA) / Rawinda Prajongjai (THA) 21-18 21-14
Next,
[R2] Kidambi Srikanth (IND,22) vs. (7) Kodai Naraoka (JPN,6)
[R2] (6) Satwiksairaj Rankireddy (IND) / Chirag Shetty (IND,6) vs. Liang Wei Kang (CHN) / Wang Chang (CHN,10)
[R2] Treesa Jolly (IND) / Gayatri Gopichand (IND,17) vs. Yuki Fukishima (JPN) / Sayaka Hirota (JPN,9)
All of these look tough matches. There are no easy matches even in early stages in these badminton tournaments.

Re: All England Open 2023
Sindhu has lost the speed of movement on the court. That is the reason for her struggles.

Re: All England Open 2023
Tresa-Gayatri had another excellent win over a top 10:pair. But, other than that everyone else lost.
Satwilk-Chirag and Prannoy lost in 3 close games. Srikanth and Lakshya lost in straight games.

Re: All England Open 2023
Indian badminton has regressed. Early losses is becoming a recurring trend. More so in singles. There is no new talent coming up either in singles.
And like in tennis are we moving ahead from singles to doubles. Matthias Boe as a doubles coach has helped. Ever since Gopi moved away from active coaching our ability to produce singles players has gone.
In this tournament also I didn't expect a lot in men's doubles as Satvik was coming off an injury lay-off but I am sure they'll pick up as the year progresses. The early singles losses are really disappointing.

Gopi is still the national coach. That is just an administrative position?

Re: All England Open 2023
Yes. He is not hands on with the players any more. Maybe he helps his daughter but that's it. Even in his academy he is not into coaching.
Re: All England Open 2023
I would disagree. He has only put Indian badminton on the map. He is more or less at Vimal Kumar level in coaching and some of the players coached by him made a conscious choice of moving to other coaches. So that means he is probably not the best in the business.rajitghosh wrote: ↑Fri Mar 17, 2023 1:28 am Ever since Gopi moved away from active coaching our ability to produce singles players has gone.
Peaks of singles or doubles didn't happen when Gopi actively coached. Singles achievements were at peak when the likes of Mulyo Handoyo coached and Shetty/Satwik were groomed by Tan Kim Her. Badminton league has to return and conduct next season to encourage new talent.
