China Open ongoing.

Only PVS, Srikanth and Satwik/Chirag through to round 2. Saina not playing.

Satwik/Ashwini almost beat the 7 seeds in XD while Satwik/Chirag continue their recent good form to beat the #7 seeds in MD.

Today, 3 out of 3 losses for us. :-(

At $750K Fuzhou China Open 2018, China (HSBC BWF World Tour Super 750)

[QF] (5) Kidambi Srikanth (IND,9) l. (4) Tien Chen Chou (TPE,3) 14-21 14-21

[QF] (3) Pusarla V. Sindhu (IND,3) l. (8) Bingjiao He (CHN,7) 17-21 21-17 15-21

[QF] Satwiksairaj Rankireddy (IND)/ Chirag Shetty (IND,23) l. Mohammad Ahsan (INA)/ Hendra Setiawan (INA,14) 11-21 21-16 12-21

Srikanth has improved a bit from early this year but still not at last year's form and Sindhu looks a bit off form. Anyway, she has picked up 3 silvers when it mattered this year - CWG, Asian games and world championships. So, ok if she loses a bit in these tournaments.

This week Syed Modi BWF super 300 tournament is taking place in New Delhi. Except for our top players in mens and womens singles, Srikanth and Sindhu , everyone else is playing.

We have for 1 contender left at the SF stage in each of the 5 categories -

These are the QF results -

[QF] (4) SAI PRANEETH B. (IND,28) l. (6) LU Guangzu (CHN,36) 10-21 21-19 14-21
[QF] PARUPALLI Kashyap (IND,52) l. (8) Sitthikom THAMMASIN (THA,46) 16-21 19-21
[QF] (3) Sameer VERMA (IND,16) d. ZHOU Zeqi (CHN,64) 21-18 16-21 21-11

[QF] (2) Saina NEHWAL (IND,9) d. (8) Rituparna DAS (IND,56) 21-19 21-14
[QF] Sai Uttejitha Rao CHUKKA (IND,88) l. (7) LI Xuerui (CHN,41) 9-21 21-19 12-21

[QF] (8) Satwiksairaj RANKIREDDY / Chirag SHETTY (IND,19) d. REN Xiangyu / OU Xuanyi (CHN,27) 15-21 21-19 21-17

[QF] (4) Ashwini PONNAPPA / REDDY N. Sikki (IND,25) d. Tania Oktaviani KUSUMAH / Vania Arianti SUKOCO (INA,60) 19-21 21-8 21-18

[QF] (6) Satwiksairaj RANKIREDDY / Ashwini PONNAPPA (IND,27) d. Ronald RONALD/ Annisa SAUFIKA (INA,31) 20-22 21-17 21-11
[QF] REDDY B. Sumeeth / Pooja DANDU (IND,NR) l. (4) Pitha Haningtyas MENTARI / Rinov RIVALDY (INA,22) 18-21 21-16 19-21

Disappointing in mens singles where we had top 3 seeds ( top seed withdrew ) but both Prannoy who lost in first round and Praneeth underperformed as they have done all year. Rest of the categories performance is as per expectations.

Need to win 3/4 matches tomorrow to consider this tournament somewhat of a success.

TBH outside of Saina's return and Satwik/Chirag's steady upwards trajectory, this has been a poor year for Indian badminton.

Big match for Sameer tomorrow, a win will secure qualification for the year-end finals as the #8 spot (and a career best #12 in the world rankings).

And Sindhu's silvers at Asiad and World championships. Based on her tour form, she has not been #2 in world or Asia this year. So, those performances were above par by her.
