Saina, who clinched gold at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018, has been in good form and will face the second seed Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in the next round on Wednesday.

While in the Men’s Singles, Sameer Verma made an early exit in the opening round thrashed by Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia with 13-21, 5-21 in just 32 minutes.

“Everyone at the Malaysia Open are way senior to us. To play on the international circuit against such big players, I don’t consider it as rivalism but that would be a good learning experience,” said Kuhoo Garg.

After a month-long break, PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth, will resume their quest for glory to face Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark and Aya Ohori of Japan in their opening round. While another Men’s Singles player B Sai Praneeth will face Wang Tzu Wei of Taiwan, who has head-to-head record of 2-0.

It will be all-Indian match in the second round of Men’s Singles, if Praneeth and Srikanth get past their opponents in the first round.

The young pair in Men’s Doubles from India, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will face the seventh seeds Takuto Inoue and Yuki Kaneko from Japan in their opening round.

The seven-day long tournament will have its finals on Sunday, July 1st.

Good to see quality wins by Sri and Sindhu to move to SF.

Next matches for them are really tough though with 2 of the dominant players on tour this year. Momota has been 24-2 for the year while Tai has been 23-1 .

Yes, tough matches for both but they are both quite capable of winning if they play their best...

Surprisingly Sindhu needed three games to win over thai girl Chochuwong ... Next, she is facing Japanese girl, Aya Ohori.

Sri had a tough match against Kento Momota, with whom he lost easily in last week's Malaysian open ... Here, he started well after winning the first game, but after that he failed to keep momentum and Momota won next two games comfortably ... The top-25 Danish girl proved too strong to Vaishnavi.

In the doubles, Manu and Sumeeth gave a fighting performance against WR #2 Chinese pair ... They took the first game but Chinese pair fought back for winning next two.

Indian badminton has regressed in 2018. Maybe time to get in some fresh thinking.

I think Mulyo Handyo's exit towards end of the last year has proved to be critical. We need a good coach to support Gopi.

Another poor performance in the slightly lower level Thailand Open by our shuttlers with only PV Sindhu reaching the finals and losing to Nozomi Okuhara.

Sindhu has made it a habit to lose finals. Saina had a much better record in finals. Maybe it is a case of mental strength. Sindhu doesn't have a whole lot of Wangs and Lis to deal with. There is only Tai and Carolina who were there earlier also and a few Japanese.
