Today's results -

At New Zealand Open, World Tour Super 300

[R2] Ajay Jayaram (IND,77) l. Kwang Hee Heo (KOR,129) 15-21,22-20,6-21
[R2] (5) Sameer Verma (IND,29) d. Lee Cheuk Yiu (HKG,38) 21-17,21-19

[R2] Lakshya Sen (IND,108) l. (1) Lin Dan (CHN,8) 21-15,15-21,12-21

Excellent fight by 16 year old Lakshya sen against top seed and legend Lin Dan. I watched that match and Lakshya looked really good in first game. He seemed to have got a bit tired towards the end. Still, morale boosting match for Lakhshya.

Next,

[QF] (5) Sameer Verma (IND,29) vs. (1) Lin Dan (CHN,8)
[QF] (3) B. Sai Praneeth (IND,19) vs. Niluka KARUNARATNE (SRI,129)

Also in doubles pair of Manu Atri and Sumeeth Reddy have made it to the mens doubles QF.

A Chinese was telling me that Lin Dan is more focused on his business now and has stopped concentrating on badminton. He plays a few tournaments for fun.

The crazy part is that he is still playing at a very high level.

Yes, he reached an All England final in March beating the likes of Lee Chong Wei on the way.

The fight Lakshya put up was really good.

16 year old Lakshya Sen could be the most exciting prospect since Prakash Padukone was the same age! (Or actually since the late Syed Modi was the same age, although the latter was cut off in his prime...).

Sai Praneeth lost in 3 games.

At New Zealand Open, World Tour Super 300

[SF] (3) B. Sai Praneeth (IND,19) l. (2) Jonatan Christie (INA,14) 21-14 19-21 9-21

I watched this match and Praneeth needs to improve both his mental toughness and physical fitness. After winning the first game , he was leading 9-3 in the second and was cruising and Christrie pushed and got close, Praneeth made some awful nervous errors. Then, in the third game he had nothing left in the tank and just gave up. Never seen a player so tired playing third game in badminton.

[R1] Sai Uttejitha Rao Chukka (IND,92) l. Ayumi Mine (JPN,183) 8-21,19-21

So, only 3 Indian players advance to the second round. But, again notable performance by 16 year old Lakshya who came very close to beating a top 40 player.

Despite losing early, very close losses for Lakshya Sen in both tournaments in this swing. The HKG player who narrowly beat him here beat Praneeth easily in QF and of course Lin Dan is still a great player.

Given his age and normal improvement progression, will not be surprised if he is the top 30 in a year from now...
