I think mental toughness cannot be coached but the mental state can change with experience. For example, the Indian cricket team at one point would mess up easy chases and mess up games against Pakistan even from winning positions by becoming tight. However, with experience and some change in coaching, etc., they started believing that they can win and not getting that tight. There are players who were tight in their first year or so in Grand Slam tennis tournaments and melted from winning positions but in future years they came back stronger and held their own. Of course, there are those like Simona Halep and Wozniacki who have not been able to turn the tide. So, we will know in a year or two, I think, if Srikanth can cut it. At some point, he will get the who-the-heck-cares attitude and not melt. Hopefully.

Ideally, we would like Srikanth to be #1 and beat #1s, but, there is no great shame in losing to the top-seed. It is back to the drawing board and more hard work to get better and move up now. I'm sure Gopichand will have things to tell him to do.
Srikanth beat him twice this year. SWH is the #1 but most people consider him a transitionary #1 (with Chen Long considered to be the best player).

@sameer, he was also clearly the better player against Lin Dan in the Olympics QF and got tight at the end.

I think it was a relative quality issue in cricket.

Pakistan team was better than us in the 90s and would win more often than not; we are a lot better than them since mid-2000s which is why we win almost all the time leaving aside the one loss in the CT final.

The quality is an issue but I think quality cannot explain a win record of around 90% either way. There was mental choking too.

Absolutely, Chen Long is the better player. However, even if he is not #1, he is certainly top-5 material. Losing to such people per se is not shameful. But, losing from comfortable/winning positions repeatedly is not a good sign. Yes, he did choke at the Olympics and here. But, the hope is that he will learn, given that he is young.

Done. Saina won. I watched most of the second set and the Scot seemed to be feeding off the crowd. She also seemed to have the better smash. So, I did the ssp thing and stopped watching. Only then could Saina win :-) Good that she pulled this out.

Hahaha. Good work Prasen.

Do this for both semi finals tomorrow. I won't watch, as that is a guarantee of a loss for our players or teams.

For a place in the finals, Saina plays the Japanese 7th seed, Nozomi Okuhara, who took out Carolina Marin. It would be lovely to see Saina and Sindhu cross their respective hurdles tomorrow and fight it out for top honors!

Saina has a 6-1 record against her. But, Saina at her worst, I guess in the second set seemed slow and mistake-prone. Hope she brings her A game out.

Sad about Srikanth losing to the world #1 who he had defeated twice earlier in the year. It does seem like a choke in the biggest tournament of all (other than Olympics).

But fabulous to see both Saina Nehwal and Pusarla Sindhu make the women's singles semifinals. The latter has an uncanny ability to reserve her best for the truly big tournaments, but it is heartening to see Saina return to her best form at the world championships, just about a year since her injury at the Rio Olympics and the rehabilitation she had to go through thereafter. With Marin no longer in contention, an all-India women's final would be the icing on the cake!

The chances of an all-Indian final actually look very bright indeed. Saina plays the Olympic bronze medalist Okuhara Nozomi, against whom she has a 6-1 career record (and hence a big psychologic edge).
And Sindhu plays the 19 year old 9th seed Chen Yufei, who has been among the world's best juniors but is playing at this level in a world championship for the first time (while Sindhu is in her third semifinal at the world championships). Sindhu, as the highest seed left in the draw, has to be the odds-on favourite.

Wonder why it took so long for PKB to respond :D

Or, rather why he didn't predict this before the tournament began. It was a "delectable" thought!

Saina has performed far better than even I could have hoped!
