Sudirman Cup 2017

Post by rajitghosh »

India lost 4-1 to Denmark today. Only Sindhu won her match. A couple of doubles matches were close. I didn't understand why they played Ajay Jayaram in the men's singles instead of Kidambi Shrikanth.

Before this match, Ajay had 3-2 win-loss record against Axelsen.

Ashwini-Sikki saved 4 match points from 16-20 and had a match point at 21-20 but failed to convert ... Danish pair converted 5th match point for completing the win ... Next, in our last group match we r facing (5/8) ranked Indonesian team.

Complete score.

Couple of very good performances in doubles - both by Ashwini Ponappa - with young Satwik in mixed doubles and with Sikki Reddy in womens doubles against top 5 level pairs from Denmark. With a bit of luck, it could so easily have been a 3-2 win for us.

Agree w/sameer here.

Our MS are all inconsistent so not a bad idea to use matchups to decide whom to start.

If Ashwini can repeat this tomorrow against Indonesia, we will win at least one of WD or XD and it will come down to Srikanth's match on who wins the tie.

Indians completed victory after winning women's doubles, MXD and 2 singles for entering into the quarters (Group1) ... Ashwini was a hero of this win as she was in mixed in our two important wins. :bounce:

Ashwini has repeated or bettered her performance with 16 yrs Satwiksairaj, as they scored an upset win over Indonesian pair in MXD in a closely fought match ... Srikanth scored comfortable straight games win over similar ranked Indonesian to give a 2-0 lead.

After that expected results, as our young doubles pair lost against WR #1 Indonesian pair but Sindhu scored straight games win over Fitriani.

Edited - In the final match, Ashwini and Sikki scored superb straight games win over WR #15 Indonesian pair for our dominating win over Indonesian team.

Excellent win by Ashwini and Satwiksairaj against a strong Indonesian pairing and a good win for Srikanth gives a 2-0 lead.

Our coaches have been bold in blooding young pairing of Satwiksairaj and Chirag. But, the they are finding the world #1 Indonesian pairing too hot to handle.

It is really sweet to see us beat one time badminton powerhouse Indonesia.

Although the win is secure, the last mixed doubles match is important for us as Indonesia-Denmark match is still to be played and if Indonesia wins that one it will become a 3 way tie and then matches won will become more important.

And Ashwini and Sikki complete a memorable 4-1 win for us by beating 15th ranked Indonesian pair in the mixed doubles 21-12 21-19.

Great work today by Ashwini in both womens and mixed doubles with her respective partners which ensured the win for us and our singles favourites Srikanth and Sindhu did what was expected from them.

Now, we have given ourselves very good chance of qualifying for QF. I think only an Indonesia win by 4-1 margin would cause a scenario where all 3 teams would be tied both on points and ties. In any other scenario, we will go thru.

Wow! And I was thinking that our doubles needs to get better before we do well in such team tournaments. I guess our doubles play has improved. :-)

Ashwini is a potential star! And having a world class doubles coach is starting to pay off.

One area where the doubles teams can significantly improve is holding on to their leads, as India let go of an advantage in the deciding game against Denmark in both the women's and mixed doubles on Monday.
That 4-1 against the Danes could have easily been a 3-2.

Wonderful to read about this remarkable 4-1 victory over Indonesia. Congrats to Pusarla Sindhu and Ashwini Ponappa, but the 16 year old Satwiksairaj Rankireddy seems a promising lad too. Good to see Srikant Kidambi win his tie comfortably as well.

Indonesia beats Denmark 3-2 which makes it a 3 way tie in our group but based on ties won India finished second and Denmark topped the group.

However, we get the worst possible draw in QF. We face China in QF. :damn:

Any of the other 3 group toppers - Denmark, Korea or Taiwan would have been ok to meet in QF.
