Fantastic, congratulations to PVS!! Marin is definitely one of the most annoying opponents, I'm glad to see Sindhu put her in her place...

Just use your height to the maximum effect and it's game over for your opponent. Huge Win! Congratulations. :notworthy:

It is her improved play at the net that fetched her the win. She (almost) always had the height. ;-)

PKBasu wrote:Sindhu has clearly been the better player for the past couple of years (as so evident at last year's Olympics). But I wouldn't write-off Saina by any means either. It is great that we have two top-8 women's badminton players, with the capacity/potential to contend credibly for world and Olympic titles on a regular basis.
Fully agree that Sindhu's trajectory currently seems to be higher than Saina's career graph. However, there is no guarantees that she can sustain the trajectory as injuries, a new generation of Chinese players etc. may get in the way. So, it's premature to conclude that her career is better than Saina's although it seems headed that way.

I don't think even that is true. If I am not wrong Saina had more super series title as well as the total number of titles at the same age. Only thing is that Sindhu has an Olympic silver. So I would certainly not say she is ahead in terms of career graph as well.

And Sindhu has 2 WC medals vs Saina's none at the same age (and one in total).

The reality is that the answer is not simple.

Sindhu has always been a big game player from the start but without the consistency to do well tournament after tournament.

Saina was incredibly consistent at a very young age but had a very poor record against her Chinese compatriots which meant no big wins.

That it is not simple is precisely my point as well. We have inconclusive data so far. As they play further tournaments may be we'll be able to figure that out.
Their medals in world championship and Olympics are minor medals. I would love to see a winner.

I loved the way Sindhu leaped up to deliver the smashes, that you would usually associate only with the men's side of the game...

Yes, both lost in very close matches - Saina lost 21-19 13-21 15-21 to 4th ranked Japanese Akane Yamagachi while Sindhu lost 13th ranked Chinese Chen Yufei 21-18 19-21 17-21. Both very close losses. Sindhu was probably a bit tired physically and mentally after last week's title win. It is very difficult to get oneself up to top level so soon after the high of a title triumph. Saina was a bit unlucky to draw Yamagachi in first round.
Also Sai Praneeth put up a terrific fight against Chinese superstar Lin Dan losing in 3 close games - 21-18, 19-21, 18-21.

The only Indian to progress to second round was Ajay Jayaram who beat 23rd ranked Chinese Quiao Bin in straight games.
