In a 32-person draw, it is amazing that the 8th seed (ranked 10th in the world) gets to play the world's 11th ranked player (i.e., the top-ranked player among those unseeded) in R1. This is either very bad news for Saina or for the 2016 Olympic bronze medalist (and reigning All England champion).

Ashwini and Siki needed to dig deep for a win on extra points in the third game against local pair ... Now they will face 4th seed Swiss-Malaysian pair ... Other hand disappointing losses of Verma brothers in contrasting style.

[Q1] (3) Sameer Verma (IND,23) l Kazumasa Sakai (JPN,52) 17-21 12-21
[Q1] Sourabh Verma (IND,41) l (4) Anthony Sinisuka Ginting (INA,32) 10-21 21-14 20-22
[Q1] Ashwini Ponnappa (IND)/ N. Sikki Reddy (IND) bt Lauren Smith (ENG)/ Sarah Walker (ENG) 21-17 16-21 24-22

[Q2] Ashwini Ponnappa (IND)/ N. Sikki Reddy (IND) vs (4) Nadia Fankhauser (SUI)/ Sannatasah Saniru (MAS)

Very disappointing particularly by Sameer Verma. I am expecting him to go up fast in the rankings this year and started well with India GP gold title but bad loss today. It was good fight by Sourabh who came back from 7-17 down in third game but missed a match point at 20-19.

Ashwini-Sikki saved 3 match points from 17-20 down and then another one at 20-21.

Ashwini and Siki failed to cross final hurdle and lost their match in three games.

[Q2] Ashwini Ponnappa (IND)/ N. Sikki Reddy (IND) l (4) Nadia Fankhauser (SUI)/ Sannatasah Saniru (MAS) 15-21 21-18 18-21

Disappointing start in the doubles as our both pairs lost in the first round ... I was hoping a win by Manu and Sumeeth against British qualifiers.
In MXD, Pranaav and Sikki lost in the close match against Korean pair.

[R1] Manu Attri (IND)/ B. Sumeeth Reddy (IND) l (Q) Peter Briggs (ENG)/ Tom Wolfenden (ENG) 19-21 21-10 18-21
[R1] Meghana Jakkampudi (IND)/ Poorvisha S Ram (IND) l Ya Ching Hsu (TPE)/ Ti Jung Wu (TPE) 19-21 12-21

[R1] Pranaav Jerry Chopra (IND)/ N. Sikki Reddy (IND) l Yeon Seong Yoo (KOR)/ Ha Na Kim (KOR) 19-21 20-22

Saina started with a comfortable win against defending champion Okuhara, who was playing her first match after November ... Next, she is facing German girl Fabienne Deprez ... Sindhu also started with dominating win over her Danish opponent ... Next, she is facing Indonesian girl Dinar Dyah Ayustine ... Prannoy needed to dig deep for his win over similar ranked Chinese opponent Qiao Bin ... After losing the first game Prannoy had 4 game points at 20-16, Bin saved all 4 but Prannoy converted 5th for taking the match into the final game ... Prannoy kept his composure and nerve for winning this game ... Next, he is having another tough Chinese challenge from WR #6 Houwei Tian.

Srikanth struggled to continue as he lost against Chinese qualifier in three games ... Ajay also lost against his Chinese opponent without challenging him in the second.

[R1] Kidambi Srikanth (IND,30) l (Q) Junpeng Zhao (CHN,53) 19-21 21-19 12-21
[R1] Ajay Jayaram (IND,19) l Huang Yuxiang (CHN,27) 19-21 13-21
[R1] Prannoy H. S. (IND,21) bt Qiao Bin (CHN,24) 17-21 22-20 21-19
[R1] (6) Pusarla V. Sindhu (IND,5) bt Mette Poulsen (DEN,33) 21-10 21-11
[R1] (8) Saina Nehwal (IND,10) bt Nozomi Okuhara (JPN,11) 21-15 21-14

[R2] Prannoy H. S. (IND,21) vs (7) Houwei Tian (CHN,6)
[R2] (6) Pusarla V. Sindhu (IND,5) vs Dinar Dyah Ayustine (INA,39)
[R2] (8) Saina Nehwal (IND,10) vs Fabienne Deprez (GER,63)

Very disappointing loss by Srikanth. Saw his match yesterday and he made so many errors against the much lower ranked Chinese. Perhaps he has still not fully recovered from injury which made him sit out for last 3-4 months or he is still rusty.

Easy win for Sindhu in straight games again..... likewise for Saina...
Prannoy couldn't put up too much of a fight against Houwei....

So, it is the ladies again to keep the flag flying high.... :goodluck:

[R2] Prannoy H. S. (IND,22) l. (7) Houwei Tian (CHN,6) 13-21, 5-21

[R2] (6) Pusarla V. Sindhu (IND,6) d. Dinar Dyah Ayustine (INA,39) 21-12, 21-4
[R2] (8) Saina Nehwal (IND,9) d. Fabienne Deprez (GER,63) 21-18, 21-10

Our men have been underwhelming in this European tour. There was an earlier tournament before the All-England (the German Open) where they lost easily and early as well.

Hope one of them can beat Tai. Otherwise she has the number of both Saina and Sindhu. I would assume Saina can beat Sung Ji Hyun.

Sindhu being throughly outplayed after leading 10-7 in the first game...

Lost the first game and is trailing 6-11 in the second... :-(

Lost in straight games, all done in 35 mins...

[QF] (6) Pusarla V. Sindhu (IND,6) l. (1) Tzu Ying Tai (TPE,1) 14-21, 10-21
