Us winning the Thomas cup is unbelievable!! Our focus on improving in doubles (through higher a different coach for doubles etc.) has finally paid off.

Superb effort. Saw the first match on TV.
Lakshya Sen was hammered in first set. He lost some 13 points in a row…Was terrible to watch. But, he turned it around unbelievably well. What a match to win and start the tie. Doubles win was exceptional too. Couldn’t watch…Historic win for India. Congratulations to the team.

I think Srikanth and Satwik-Chirag are stars of this showing for us. Srikanth won 6 out of 6 matches, of which last 2 were against higher ranked players and almost all of them in crunch matches. Satwik-Chirag won 5 out of their 6 matches and their last 3 wins were against teams from Malaysia, Denmark and Indonesia which we would have never thought we would win against a few years back. Their only loss was against Taiwanese olympic gold medalists.

I thought these 2 were key contributors, Lakshya won 1 good match against Ginting today and Prannoy had 2 crunch wins against Denmark and Malaysia but these are the matches which you would expect Prannoy to win in normal tournament play.

I think Lakshya Sen's rise made a big difference. He playing first singles meant Srikanth and Prannoy faced relatively easier opponents. Just shows our depth in singles. Of course I am taking nothing away from them. A 100% record is simply amazing.

I thought my eyes deceived me, but this shot at a crucial moment really happened:

This is going to be hard to beat as the Indian sporting achievement of the year.

We won this because of our singles depth and all 3 of Lakshya, Srikanth and Prannoy are in decent form (and certainly top 15 players at this point of time).

What an absolutely stunning achievement :notworthy: :notworthy:  .

The farthest we had ever reached in the Thomas Cup was the semifinal in 1979, when Prakash was approaching his prime and a young Syed Modi was emerging. But then we lost the doubles in most rounds (with Prakash usually teaming up with Uday Pawar as the first doubles pairing). Against Denmark in the 1979 SF, Prakash won his two singles (including over Morten Frost in straight games) but we lost 2-7.

The key to this triumph has indeed been the emergence of Lakshya Sen, who now plays the 1st singles for us -- against the top player from the opposition (eg, #1 Axelsen against Denmark) -- allowing Srikanth and Prannoy to take on lower-ranked opponents. We have depth in singles: Prannoy (#23) is actually ranked lower than Sai Praneeth (#16). Lakshya (#9 in the world) was ranked below both the Indonesian singles players. Beating the Olympic bronze medalist Antony Ginting (#5) was a huge achievement for Sen, and set us off on the right note -- but, as the Duke of Wellington said about his victories at Assaye and Waterloo, "it was a close-run thing". Satwik-Chirag (#8 in the world) are the only Indian doubles pair in the top-40. Our second pair is ranked 46. So the Chitwak-Sirag close-run victory was truly special -- over a pair comprising one half each of the top- and second-ranked doubles pairs in the world. Simply stupendous!

This is ageing well, isn't it?
Yep! Hats off! :bounce: To the team. And, to the ornate brute!!!

What sticks in mind that there were so many close games and somehow at crucial points, our guys showed their mental focus. Kinda crazy. We don't expect that of our guys, but these guys seemed to just believe in themselves! Stupendous.

Experience. Badminton always has close games at this level. As does TT, etc. All of these guys have been in such pressure-cooker situations for several years now.

Even though we have superstars in women singles but clearly depth in mens have made the difference... Gopichand was right this win is bigger than 1983 Cricket world cup win... Unbelievable achievement by our boys

Really? Even our own forumite had predicted a 3-0 win. Or, at least its probability. Did anyone* even think that India will win the World Cup especially beat the mighty Windies in the final? Next they will “demand” plots, awards, and money. Of course, they should and will be recognized, but let’s not get carried away. Gopi can but he shouldn’t be making such statements.

* Actually, I think Kim Hughes had called India a dark horse before the tournament started. Yes, here is a link recalling that but also the unlikely final outcome.
