Re: BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals 2016, Jiantsu, China

China were eliminated in the quarters or earlier for the first time ever in Thomas cup.

Agree with sameer on having zero chance against the Chinese women. Hope Saina and Sindhu can win to help their ranking cause for seedings at Rio. Also would help from a confidence perspective.

They could not do that and we lost 0-3.

Uber Cup

Semi finals

India l. China 0-3

Saina NEHWAL (IND,8) l. LI Xuerui (CHN,3) 15-21 21-12 17-21

P. V. Sindhu (IND,10) l. WANG Shixian (CHN,6) 13-21 21-23

Jwala GUTTA / NELAKURIHI Sikki Reddy (IND) l. ZHAO Yunlei / TIAN Qing (CHN) 6-21 6-21

Both Saina and Sindhu seem to have a metal block against Chinese players. Saina has lost the last 7 matches against Li and at least 3 of them she has come quite close but not able to get over the line.

Sindhu was up 18-8 in the second game but allowed Wang to come back and win in straight games.

Both will have to overcome this if they have to aim for a medal at Rio.

India has a good chance of reaching the knockout stage after getting relatively favorable draws at the BWF Thomas and Uber Cup Finals to be held in Bangkok from May 20 to 27 ... The top two teams in each group at the end of the group stage will make it to the knock-out round ... Our both teams are seeded 5/8th in their respective events.

Thomas Cup
Group A: China, India, France, Australia
Group B: Indonesia, Korea, Canada, Thailand
Group C: Chinese Taipei, Japan, Germany, Hong Kong
Group D: Denmark, Malaysia, Russia, Algeria

Uber Cup
Group A: Japan, India, Canada, Australia
Group B: Thailand, Chinese Taipei, Germany, Hong Kong
Group C: Korea, Denmark, Russia, Mauritius
Group D: China, Indonesia, France, Malaysia

Yes, BFI is resting key players due to injuries and have them fresh for Asian games/world championships later in the year.

For thomas cup, Srikanth and the top doubles team Satwik-Chirag are not there and strangely # singles Prannoy and #2 doubles Manu-Sumit were rested for the match against France. Still, Sameer Verma and Lakshya Sen should have won their matches.

In uber cup, no Sindhu and no Ashwini-Sikki. Again Saina lost her match which made it easier for Canada to win.

Looks like with not much chance of progressing with weak team, those who are playing are also not motivated enough.

This is quite myopic. Giving up before the competition has even started is simply ridiculous!

Surprised by the team selections. Uber and Thomas Cups should have been given priority as the top team competitions in badminton. Understand leaving out those who aren't 100% fit from the team but it seems we even fielded the second string among the folks who were sent which really made little sense.

Badminton is one of the few sports (other than cricket and shooting) in which we are now a serious world power (at least in singles; we have two of the best women players of the past decade, and 3 top-20 men). For us not to compete properly for the main world team championship for the sport is absolutely bizarre and mind-boggling. When will our sports administrators ever come to their senses?

Totally agree with Arjun and PKB. Uber/Thomas Cup are very important events in the badminton calendar and should not be given short shrift.

Uber cup 2018, India has shown tremendous team spirit, and their passion for game badminton too. We love the way Indians have played the game throughout the tournament with so much confidence. I think India will get more and more medal in the coming future. All the best India

Reviving this thread as our teams started their campaign in this year's events in Thailand today.

Out Thomas cup team appears quite strong this time with Lakshya, Srikanth and Prannoy as 3 singles players and Satwik-Chirag as first doubles team can we finally win a medal in this event. Uber cup team is weak with only Sindhu being really world class, other singles are weak. Not expecting much there.

In Thomas cup we are in Group C along with Germany, Canada and Taiwan. We started with a 5-0 win over Germany today. We play Canada next. The key match will be the one against Taiwan to decide group toppers and easier draw in QF,

In Uber cup, we are in Group D along with Korea, Canada and USA. We started with a 4-1 win over Canada today. This was key win to get to the QF as we should win over USA. Not expecting much against Korea and the QF.

Beating USA in women’s badminton with their home grown Asian talent is no gimme. I’m curious how we will perform.
