BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals

Post by sameerph »

Both the Indian teams playing in Thomas and Uber cup finals in China this week. Our Thomas cup is depleted with the absence of our top 3 singles stars - Srikanth, Kashyap and Prannoy due to injuries/other reasons. So, does not looks like chance there of reaching even QF.

Womens team is at full strength and should at least reach QF.

Mens team started with a loss and women with a win.

Thomas Cup

India l. Thailand 2-3

Ajay JAYARAM l. Tanongsak SAENSOMBOONSUK 16-21 21-12 14-21
Manu ATTRI/ Sumeeth Reddy B. l. Bodin ISSARA / Nipitphon PUANGPUAPECH 17-21 6-21
Sai Praneeth B. d. Khosit PHETPRADAB 21-11 21-16
Akshay DEWALKAR / Satwiksairaj RANKIREDDY l. Puavaranukroh DECHAPOL/ Kedren KITTINUPONG 15-21 21-14 15-21
Sourabh VARMA d. Adulrach NAMKUL 21-17 16-21 21-19

Bad showing by Ajay and our no.1 doubles pair of Manu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy against lower ranked players. Else, we should have won against Thailand even with a depleted team.

Another loss for us in Thomas cup.

India l. Hongkong 2-3

Ajay JAYARAM l. Ka Long Angus NG 13-21 12-21
Manu ATTRI/ Sumeeth Reddy B. l. Chin Chung OR / Chun Man TANG 19-21 12-21
Sai Praneeth B. d. Yun HU 23-21 23-21
Satwiksairaj RANKIREDDY / Chirag SHETTY l. Tsz Kit CHAN / Cheuk Him LAW 10-21 11-21
Sourabh VARMA d. Nan WEI 17-21 21-19 21-9

So, we are out of the race for QF here which was to be expected considering our top 3 singles players not being there. But, if only Ajay Jayaram and Manu Atri/ Sumit Reddy shown more spark and pulled of wins against similar or lower ranked opponents we could have won both these matches against Thailand and Hongkong. The silver lining in this match were the wins by Sai Praneeth and Sourabh Varma over much higher ranked top-20 opponents.

Our women play their match against Germany later today.

Comprehensive win for our women against Germany.

Uber Cup

India d. Germany 5-0

Saina NEHWAL d. Fabienne DEPREZ 21-15 21-10
V. Sindhu PUSARLA d. Luise HEIM 21-7 21-12
Jwala Gutta/Ashwini Ponnappa d. Linda EFLER / Lara KAEPPLEIN 14-21 21-9 21-8
Ruthvika Shivani d. Yvonne LI 21-5 21-15
Sikki Reddy/P V Sindhu d. Isabel HERTTRICH / Franziska VOLKMANN 21-18 19-21 22-20

So, we have qualified for the QF but play an important match tomorrow against Japan to decide who will top the group and get an easier QF opponent.

I think India will lose easily. At max we can win two singles and even 0-5 is possible.

Agree, considering our patchy performance against Japanese girls.

So it won't be 0-5. Also Okuhara's form has gone down as I suspected and mentioned in some other thread.

Saniafan, so no credit to Saina for this win ?

Saina Nahwal (IND,8) d. Nozomi OKUHARA (JPN,5) 21-18 21-6

Excellent start given by Saina to us with a straight games win over world no. 5.

And Sindhu makes it 2-0 for us.

P. V. Sindhu (IND,10) d. Akane YAMAGUCHI (JPN,11) 21-11 21-18

But, now the difficult task for one of our 2 doubles pairs or our third singles player Ruthvika Shivani to try to steal at least 1 win to win the tie for us.

All credit to Saina that day in and day out she performs at very high level. But the issue is that other players have their lows and highs and at their peak they will always beat Sania. That his why you always see consistent performance from her but players like Okuhara, Tai, Intanon and even Marin(who is also on downward path right now) are unbeatable for some time and then struggle against lesser player. They are more likely to win tourmaments whereas Saina will have more semi final/QF appearances.

it is 2-1 now with Jwala and Ashwini losing at 11 and 8. I don't even expect a game in this match now.

It was not Jwala and Ashwini but Jwala and Sikky Reddy who lost world no. 1 Japanese pair. It seems we have split up Jwala and Ashwini here.

Ruthvika Shivani lost 7-21 14-21 against Sakaya Sato. I expected more fight from her in this match.

So, deciding doubles between Sindhu and Ashwini against a Japanese pair who is no. 10 in the world.

PV Sindhu and Ashwini Ponnappa has lit up the Kunshan sports center. What a first game. 21-15 to our girls

Update 1 : Lost the second game 19-21. Scoreline is very close but I feel the Japanese played really well. Sindhu must be tired and I don't have good omens about the third game

Lost the third game but what a fight from our girls. Really enjoyed the match
