But, it looks like top 2 US players are not playing here. So, we should have it easy.

Today our men beat Canada 5-0 as expected. So, our QF berth is sealed. Taiwan beat Germany and Canada too quite easily. So,our match against them on Wednesday should be real tough one to decide group winner.

(via the Bridge)

India defeats USA 4-1 in the Uber Cup to all but ensure their entry into the knockout stages!🇮🇳👊 Victories for PV Sindhu, Ashmita Chaliha, Aakarshi Kashyap and Treesa Jolly/Tanisha Crasto were enough to see off the American challenge.

Against Korea in Uber cup and against Taiwan in Thomas cup in last group matches tomorrow. Matches which will decide group toppers and QF match-up. Looks very difficult in Uber cup, Thomas cup will be even match.

Our women lost 0-5 to Korea.

Our men lost to 2-3 to Taiwan. Close match which could have gone either way, Srikanth and Prannoy won their singles matches against Taiwanese #2 and #3 but Lakshya Sen lost to Taiwanese #1 17-21 in third game. Our doubles teams too lost in close matches.

Women up against Thailand in QF, men against Malaysia in QF.

Our women lost 0-3 against Thailand. Sindhu lost in 3 games against Intanon and after that we had no chance. With no Saina, our second and third singles is too weak. And doubles pairs are just too young.

Our men up against Malaysia right now. Lakshya lost in straight games against Lee Zi Jia but just now Satwik- Chirag have levelled us up 1-1 with a good win over top Malaysian pair.

Srikanth easily beats Malyasian #2 in straight games but our #2 doubles pair lost to their #2 19-21 17-21.

So, it is 2-2 and it all comes down to last natch between Prannoy and Malyasian #3.

And Prannoy crushes Malaysian #3 21-13 21-8 to win the tie for us 3-2 and take us to SF. First Thomas cup medal for us since 1979.

Our greater depth paid off this time.

Funny, we do not have great doubles depth. But, we have singles depth. Our singles #1 seems to be somewhat low in the pecking order as is our #2 doubles pair.

Yes, our #2 pair is low in pecking order but not our #1 singles. Lakshya Sen lost to world #4 and #6 in last 2 matches while Srikanth beat those outside top 15 while Prannoy beat those ranked those outside top 40. They got easier opponents because Lakshya has moved up in rankings.

True. But, your comment proves my point. Our #1 is ranked 9th in the world. The other teams' were #4 and #6. So, their #1 player is stronger than ours, relatively speaking. Our depth having #2 and #3 ranked players being better than their #2 and #3 singles players saved us. But, in doubles, it seems our top pair was better and our #2 doubles team is very weak, I think. The opposite of singles.

What I meant was if rankings hold up, all of Denmark, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan and Taiwan would win their first match against us. So, going into the world-class tournaments, especially in the knockout stages, we have a (relatively) weak #1 singles player. But, our depth helps us. Lakshya is not low but relatively low.

That's not true actually. Lakshya Sen would be #3 and LZJ #2 if the BWF rankings weren't frozen. LS hadn't faced CTC before, but his loss against him yesterday was surprising. LZJ is in great form and hasn't lost a match since the All England SF (where he lost closely against LS only). LS as our #1 makes it really nice for Srikanth as #2 who usually wins against most non-top 10 players. Srikanth in pure flow ca defeat any player but it's his own bunch of errors that has kept him from winning consistently against the top 10 players. So this MS2 position is a blessing in disguise. HSP, again in excellent form (also striving hard for an Arjuna award), ca also defeat any player on his given day (but can lose to any random player as well, so th MS3 position augers him well too).

We were lucky to lose the group stage match to TPE; so we ended up facing the weaker MAS team in the QF rather than JAP. #2 and #3 players for MAS were quite weak (none in top 40), which made the job for Srikanth and Prannoy quite easy, once Satwik-Chirag had done what they were expected to. Satwik-Chirag were ranked higher, so they strictly only lived up to their seeding. Looks like MAS #1 doubles pair wasn't available, which worked in our favor. I think the next match against DEN is also winnable. Most of these teams JAP, MAS, TPE, IND and DEN (also CHN, which lost to INA) are pretty even. Only INA seems like the standout team so far.

Axelsen will beat Lakshya Sen. Antonsen will beat Srikanth and our 2nd doubles pair would lose anyway. Need at least 2 upsets if we have to win this.

Thomas Cup by the way is one where India has finished in the top 3 thrice in the past. In the early days the Thomas Cup used to have a Challenge Round like in Davis Cup. So in 1952 India reached the Interzonal finals beating Thailand, Australia and Denmark. It repeated in 1955 when India beat Thailand and USA but could not get past Denamrk. In 1979 there was no Challenge Round but India had the luck of the draw getting 2 walkovers and then beat Malaysia thanks to Prakash Padukone's brilliance and made the semis before losing to Denmark again.
