2016 Year-end rankings (with last year's rankings in bracket)- ( only top 50 players)

Men's Singles
15 Srikanth Kidambi (9)
19 Ajay Jayaram (21)
28 H. S. Prannoy (20)
36 Sameer Varma (46)
37 B. Sai Praneeth (34)
46 Sourabh Varma (212)

Women's Singles
6 P. V. Sindhu (12)
10 Saina Nehwal (2)

Men's Doubles
21 Manu Attri / B. Sumeeth Reddy (17)
47 Pranaav Jerry Chopra / Akshay Dewalkar (36)

Women's Doubles
25 Jwala Gutta / Ashwini Ponnappa (14)
50 JAKKAMPUDI Meghana /Poorvisha S RAM (NR)

Mixed Doubles
16 Sikki Reddy / Pranav Chopra

The one real improvement this year has been Sindhu. In mens singles, the improvement has mainly come from Verma brothers. Others have pretty much stayed at same level ( or have regressed a bit).

I am disappointed with not much progress in doubles with now full time foreign coach helping them. Only Sikki and Pranav have made good progress in mixed doubles.

The young ones to look for next year will be 17 year old Siril Verma ( already ranked 111 in mens singles), 19 year Ruthvika Shivani Gadde ( already ranked 59 in womens singles) and 17 year old doubles specialist Satwiksairaj Rankireddy ( who is ranked inside top 70 in both mens and mixed doubles).
Expect these 3 to move up inside top 50 and better next year.

Yes, we have good depth on the mens side but have had trouble having players stay in the top-10. Kashyap had a few short stints and Srikanth reached an impressive #3 but has since had difficulty getting back although he still seems our best prospect.

These are the latest rankings of our top players -

Men's Singles
13 Ajay Jayaram
21 Srikanth Kidambi
22 B. Sai Praneeth
27 Sameer Varma
29 H. S. Prannoy
40 Sourabh Varma

Women's Singles
3 P. V. Sindhu
8 Saina Nehwal
46 Rituparna Das

Men's Doubles
26 Manu Attri / B. Sumeeth Reddy
44 Satwiksairaj Ranikreddy/ Chirag Shetty
48 MR Arjun/ Shlok Ramchandran

Women's Doubles
30 Ashwini Ponnappa / Sikki Reddy
32 JAKKAMPUDI Meghana /Poorvisha S RAM
33 Sanjana Santosh / Arathi Sara Sunil

Mixed doubles
15 Pranaav Jerry Chopra / Sikki Reddy

Sindhu is back to #3 behind Tai and Marin which may be a fair position for her based on her current form. Sai Praneeth is at his career high of #22 after last week's title. Good to see couple of young doubles pairs making it to the top 50 in both mens and womens doubles.

Also with this 3 Indian men qualify for mens singles for world championships in Glasgow in August. 3 players from a country would qualify for those countries which has 3 players in top 24 and Srikanth and Praneeth just peaked at the right time. Apart from India, China, Denmark and Hongkong will have 3 players in mens singles at WC.

I am eagerly waiting to see this guy, Swastikraj Rankireddy, go places. A lot is being expected of this 17-year old. Good to see several youngsters choosing doubles very early in their career, which is what Gopi cited as a challenge he faced in not being able to produce any top doubles pair thus far. It will be nice if we can have at least a couple of top-10 ranked pairs in all 3 doubles events by 2020 Olympics.

Next week Srikanth will be in top 10 and can go higher if he goes deeper this week. Sai Praneeth also has a chance to go higher next week.

Saina must be having her lowest ranking (16) in a long time.

From what I heard, Satwiksairaj is a super exciting prospect in doubles. I wish he is paired up with a youngster in Mxd category than with Ashwini, who might be on the decline.

Ashwini had some of the best results in her career in the recently concluded Sudirman Cup so I would not say that at all.

If a youngster is not ready, it may not be bad to play with a veteran for a few years. He will learn from her the tricks of the trade and then can pair up with a junior woman.

In badminton, why is someone a super-exciting doubles candidate and not a singles player? He cannot cut it in singles but is top-class in doubles?

Varma, Ashwini's age is 27 yrs., not a 30+ yr old veteran ... :p
