The kind of prizes that are being announced for both medal winners is mind boggling. I do not have any complaints on them getting their due rewards. But, only if some of this money had been spent on players training etc. a few years before Olympics, we had a chance of getting more medals.

To be fair though, they have been supportive before too.

KTR / Sindhu recalled that she was given Rs 40 lakhs last year when she needed it. Additionally, as per the TOP scheme annexure, Sindhu was also given Rs 45 lakhs through that scheme. Additionally, GopiChand academy has been given Rs 4 crores over the last two years through NSDF scheme. I am sure there was additional support that she may have got from the other trusts. Probably these are not highlighted in the media enough.

Yes, I have no doubt Sindhu had good financial support before Rio too. What I was saying was the financial support for some of the other competitors from the beginning to those qualified or even to those who could not qualify due to lack of support.

Completely agree. The same money would be well spent on building infrastructure, facilities, hiring of experts coaches and spreading the game around the country. That is more efficient way of developing sports and athletes than this post-facto inundation of gifts on a sole athlete. If you want to recognize an athlete, name a sports facility or something after these high achievers than just showering money on them. That way they will be inspiring the newcomers for years to come.

Below quote from the interview with Sindhu.

Qn: The first thing Gopichand said after you won the silver medal at Rio was that he would give your mobile phone back. You are someone who uses the mobile phone a lot when not in practice. How difficult was it to stay away from your phone?

It was not very difficult. I feel if you want to achieve something big, you have to sacrifice a few things.
I didn't feel that if I give up my mobile phone I would be in trouble or something; it was okay for me.
When the coach asked me for it I immediately gave up my phone because I knew what it was for.
After the Olympics I did get my phone back, so it was not a problem for me.
Every athlete dreams of winning an Olympic medal and my dream was also that.
So there were many sacrifices along the way, but you cannot say it was a sacrifice. If you want to achieve something you have to give up a few things.
For me, it was really important to maintain my diet and that is the case for every athlete.

So TRUE. We can see the trust between player and coach - hope it continues, with some fine tuning / inputs from additional resources, for the Tokyo Olympics as well!!

Another important step taken by PV Sindhu in her career today when she won the China open super premier singles title. It was a bit surprising that Sindhu who is a 2 time medallist at world championships and a medallist at Olympics had not yet won a super series title. She corrected that anomaly today. She beat 2 top 10 chinese players on the way and at one stage was 3 match points down in her SF against the Korean Sun.

Sindhu seemed to be a bit unprepared for first few tournaments that she played in Europe last month after all the Rio celebrations. But, glad that she came storming back this week. Hope now she goes from strength to strength and get to # 1 ranking at some point.

Last 2 years we had both Srikanth and Saina qualify for Super Series finals in Dubai. This year we have only Sindhu qualify for the first time in her career. So, we will discuss in her thread.

Sindhu is in Group B along with top seed and world #1 Marin, Japanese world # 8 Yamagachi and Chinese world # 6 Sun Yu.

Not a bad draw for Sindhu. She plays Yamagachi tomorrow in first match.

And she does well when she is an underdog. Today, she had a slow start and lost the first game but came back and won the next 2 games.

And Marin lost in straight games against the Chinese Sun Yu. So, this group is wide open and tomorrow Sindhu will play Yu in the match between 2 winners today . Sindhu is 3-3 against Yu and won their last match in China SSP final.
