Saina Nehwal Thread (Singapore Open)
Earlier in Badminton thread I had mentioned that Saina lost in singles too. I was wrong. The results on asian badmiton site were confusing.
Anyways, asian junior singles started yesterday and Saina made my day.

Go Saina, win the cupSaina Nehwal (left) of India took the crowd by surprise by eliminating Choi Joo Min of Korea in the first round of the girl's singles in the 8th Asian Junior Badminton Championships 2005. Saina seeded 9/16 in the main draw. She had a hard fought match against Choi before beating Choi in straight sets, 13-11, 11-7.

Is this an under-19 event? And does she then have a couple more opportunities to win it in future?

I am not sure about the age. I guess it should be 18 years. She is only 16 now and she still has couple of years.

Saina Nehwal won three titles in the span of 50 minutes (national junior ranking tournament). She first beat unseeded Arundathi Pantwane of Maharashtra 11-4, 11-2 (U-16 finals) in just 17 minutes.
She was back on court after the gap of 20 minutes to win the doubles title 15-1 , 15-2(U-19 doubles finals)
And in the afternoon session she demolished the fourth seed Sayali Gokhale 11-0, 11-0 (U-19 finals) in just 15 minutes.
She is only 15 years old and not 16 as I mentioned earlier.

Saina is a diamond in the rough that needs to be polished to become the jewel of Indian badminton.
Please, please, please! Will someone in Indian badminton look after her career properly?

A news article on Saina

Come on Saina we want the same too. And I really think you can do it. Come on, work towards it.

But Saina has higher ambitions. "I want to win an Olympic gold," she says.

Thanks Sandeep for the report.
According to the article in The Hindu quoted by Sandeep:
"The Gopi Chand Academy has plans to send her to Holland or Denmark for training soon. That's the best thing that can happen to her career at the moment."
The sooner, the better.
Saina must start playing against players of her standard or better to become a world class player. It is good for her to take part in many tournaments in India to stay match fit, but it will not make her an Olympic champion.
I seem like a broken record, but when will the AP government or Indian government or some industry sponsor her to play in Europe, Japan, Korea, etc on a regular basis?

The financial support from the state or cetral government should come before a player wins the junior world title. How can a player win a world junior title without financial support? Saina has already shown her tremendous potential at this young age. What else are the Indian sports authorities waiting for?

More than her aggressive play, it is the hard work the 16-year-old has put in and a burning desire to win that have brought her to the stage she is today. Time and again, she has displayed the ability to fight back from grim situations, all signs of a future champion.
