Re: Saina Nehwal Thread - WR#2 on Jul 2010/ Jan-Mar 2013
well given her form a win itself will be an achievement , straight games or not...
I am surprised how did she qualify for this tournament? All i remember is she losing to pretty much anyone and everyone this year and has gone without a title...still top 8 of the world this year?

Re: Saina Nehwal Thread - WR#2 on Jul 2010/ Jan-Mar 2013
She had 3 super series SF earlier in the year - at Malyasian open, All England & Indonesian open & also QF in 3 more tournaments. So, finishing among top 8 in 6 out of 10 events those counted would have been enough for her to make it to the last 8.
But, her performance is a pale shadow of her performances in last 2-3 years when she used to win at least 1-2 big tournaments every year. This year she never made it past SF in any of the tournaments & had a solitary win over a top 10 player against Shixian Wang at All England.
Probably, the worst year for her in last 3-4 years at least.
Next year will be crucial with commonwealth games & Asian games coming up. If she is not able to lift her performances up next year, it will be very difficult to do that anytime later.

Saina won her last match but failed to qualify for Semi finals.
Saina Nehwal (IND,6) d. Yeon Ju Bae (KOR,7) 21-11 17-21 21-13
She needed to win this in straight games to reach the SF. So, her close loss against Mitani in first match proved to be crucial. Still, at last a good win for her after some time.

She is playing in The Star Autralian badminton Open. Won her first round against Sun Yu of china. She had lost to Chinese previously there fore it was a good win. Next Up is PC Thulasi Which Saina should win easily.

Saina seems to have withdrawn from CWG. What a disappointment! Expected a gold from her. Seems to be suffering feet blisters.

I think this is not too bad for Saina. Commonwealth games is too easy for her and there are tougher events coming up in world championships and Asian games where she will be more tested. It will be important for her to be fresh for that. Perhaps this will also give Sindhu a chance to win a medal in CWG.

Re: Saina Nehwal Thread - WR#2 on Jul 2010/ Jan-Mar 2013
Saina winning the womens singles title in the Chinese Super Series has been overshadowed a bit by awesome performance by compatriot Kidambi Srikanth against Lin Dan in mens final. But, Saina's is a great achievement as she beat 3 Chinese players back to back and then managed to overcome junior sensation Yamagachi in the final.
After a bad 2012, this has been a pretty good year for Saina winning 3 titles so far - 2 superseries tournaments an 1 grand prix gold ones. Since the start of this year, she has had only 1 loss against a non-Chinese player, Erioko Hirose at Singapore open. All her other losses have come against top 3 Chinese players - 3 each against Yihan Wang and Shixian Wang and 2 against Li Xurei. She had only 1 win in the against Shixian Wang at the Australian pen super series.
So,she has simply been the 4th best player in the world this year by a good margin but needs to find a way to beat the top 3 Chinese to move further ahead.

Saina has been quietly playing all right again... Just when we thought she was on a free fall. She is not done just yet.
