India's major sporting achievements in 2004

Indian players and coaches started off the 2004 well with Saurav Ghosal winning the British Junior Open Squash under 19 boys title and Joshna finishing runner-up in the girls under 19! The Indian team performed superbly and finished ahead of the fancied European teams. Egypt, Pakistan and India are now the top three in junior squash.

Congratulations to the players, coaches and support staff.

(Forum members: please add significant achievements of Indian players in 2004 in this thread. At the end of the year we will have PKB or his designate compile all the achievements and place it in the forum for historical purpose. Thanks.)

I like Bhushan's optimism in naming this thread "2004 -- What a year for Indian sport". But in all fairness I don't think we should jump the gun just yet. Why not just call the thread "India's major sporting achievements in 2004", and then compile them nearer the end of the year?
I hope (and, indeed, expect) that this will be an even better year than last year for Indian sport, but we can't yet be sure about it...Sourav Ghoshal and the Border-Gavaskar trophy are a good start (but in all fairness, most of the latter was achieved in 2003!).

PKB, I was away for a few days and could not reply to your posting.

I had planned to call this thread "achievements of Indian sports stars" and then I noticed that in the first week of January 2004 Indians had won in squash and cricket. Several years back these two notable achievements could have been "What a Year for Indian Sports".

Well I agree with PKB, and now a "What a Year for Indian Sports" requires more than just two major victories I will rename the thread "India's major sporting achievements in 2004".

Jan '13 - India finished top in the Asian Sailing Championship in Mumbai. The final three standings are as follows;

1st - India - 5 Gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze
2nd - Japan - 2 Gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze
3rd - China - 2 Gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze

Defending champion Viswanathan Anand won the 66th Corus Grandmasters Chess tournament, Holland with a score of 8.5 points from 13 rounds.

The participants are Anand, Kramnik, Sokolov, Leko, Svidler, Adams, Timman, Topalov, Bareev, Akopian, Shirov, Bologan, Zhang, Van Wely.

For whatever it is worth, Saurav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Anju Bobby George (athletics), and Dilip Kumar Tirkey (hockey) were chosen for the Padma Shri award this year.

Beenamol also got the award.

IMHO, Anjali Vedpathak should have got ahead of Beenamol. Earlier, she was overlooked for Khel ratna Award but Govt made amends to give both of them KR award. But once again Anjali was sidelined.

India won a gold and a silver in the Dave Schultz Memorial International Wrestling Championship. (No wrestling thread so posting here)

May not be a big achievement but hope the matmen go all out to book more berths.

And beating Pakistan in Pakistan in a test series also qualifies as one of the sporting achievements of 2004 -- especially as it included India's first and second test wins in Pakistan ever (i.e., in fifty years of trying).
