2004 PGA Tournament - Arjun/Daniel/Vijay/(Jyoti)

Post by Kumar »

The first PGA tournament is Mercedes Championship, but I guess it is only for winners!!!! In that case, would the Sony Open Honolulu (Jan 15-18) be the first tournament for Arjun and Daniel?

There are still several days for the US PGA golfers to sign in for the Sony Open and the names of the players who have signed in already have not been officially announced. I am sure that Daniel and Arjun are eager to match their golf skills with Tiger, Vijay, Ernie, etc at the first opportunity in 2004.

How many people have won their first PGA tournament? -Kumar
The winner of the very first PGA tournament obviously won his first PGA tournament but I am sure Kumar is not looking for that answer. I could not find any golfer listed as winning his first PGA tournament. Daniel or Arjun can become one. :D

Some interesting facts:

Youngest winner: Johnny McDermott 19 years, 10 months
1911 US. Open

Oldest Winner: Sam Snead - 52 years, 10 months
1965 Greater Greensboro Open

Most Money Won By a Rookie: $1,864,584 by Carlos Franco in 1999
(Daniel and Arjun can try to beat this record)

Kumar, here is another interesting statistics that Daniel and Arjun can shoot for. In 2003 Ben Curtis won the British Open in his first major tournament of his career. He was a 1000-1 to win the British Open, and now he is the rookie of the year.

2004 PGA Tournament - Arjun/Daniel/Vijay/(Jyoti)

The Mercedes PGA Championship starts today at the Plantation Course, Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii although the real action does not start until Thursday Jan. 8th. Arjun Atwal and Daniel Chopra are not in the field as this tournament is restricted to 30 golfers. Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Ernie Els, Davis Love III, Mike Weir, etc will be in action to win the $1,060,000 first prize. Ernie Els won this tournament last year and took home a million dollars and a brand new SL 500 Mercedes car.

TV schedule for this tournament:
Thurs Jan 8, 2004 ESPN 7:00 - 10:30 PM EST
Fri Jan 9, 2004 ESPN 7:00 PM - 10:30 PM EST
Sat Jan 10, 2004 ESPN 7:00 PM - 10:30 PM EST
Sun Jan 11, 2004 ESPN 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM EST

Arjun and Daniel will play the next tournament (Sony Open) at Waialae Country Club, Honolulu, Hawaii from Jan 15 to 18.

Less than a week left for Arjun and Daniel debut on PGA tour. It will be exciting time for Indian golf.
A warning - We need to keep out expectation moderate as making the cut itself will be an achievement. I remember when Arjun started playing EPGA, it wasn't that easy for him to make the cut.

Folks, the action has started and PGA 2004 is on its way. The first tournament of the PGA 2004 and Vijay Singh seems to start from where he left. After a bogie free first round and 5 birdies, Vijay was T3 in a restricted field of top golfers (30 players). Tiger, who started with a first round of -2, opened his 2nd round on a wrong foot as he lost 3 strokes in first two holes. But he pulled back one stroke with a birdie on 3rd and currently tied at 22.
Vijay is yet to start his second round.

Vijay showed in 2003 that others can also reach the level of Tiger Woods or even upstage him. With no love lost between them let's see how this rivalry goes in 2004.

I'm sure that both Arjun and Daniel will be benefit with the presence of Vijay Singh as even few encouraging words by the champion can make a difference in their performance.

2004 PGA Tournament - Arjun/Daniel/Vijay/(Jyoti)

Post by PKBasu »

I hope Vijay does feel some affinity with golfers from his country of origin. If so, he could be a great mentor for Arjun, Daniel and (eventually) Jeev, Jyoti, etc. His path (starting from the APGA, then gradually playing EPGA or JPGA events before graduating to the big league) is the one most Indian players have trod...

Vijay did spectacularly well in the second round with streak of 7 birdies to finish 9 under 64 for the day and 14 under for the tournament to remain at top position at the end of first round 1stroke ahead of stuart appleby. . !!!! Woods is tied for 8th with 3 under today and 5 under overall and 9 shots behind Vijay.

Letz hope PKB's prayers are answered and Vijayfeel affinity with Arjun and other Indians and help them out in their debut tour. .

As far as the expectations for Arjun and Daniel go, how many tournaments would you expect them to make the cut? (in terms of percentage?)

Kumar,
I would probability give them 40% of the tournaments to make the cut. We need to give them a year to settle down at this level. Fortunately both of them have earlier experience of European tour and that should help. It will be a tough strugle just to keep their card for next year.

But you never know, Arjun did win an EPGA event in his first year itself. May be he or Daniel win a tournament itself.
