Gill with an impressive century to chase down 296 in the Deodhar Trophy but of course, nowhere near the Indian team. While we continue playing musical chairs in the middle order outside of useless Dhoni.

If you are playing Pant for Dhoni, say, who does Gill replace? Kedar will be needed because none of the others bowl. So, basically, you are saying Gill for Rayudu?
If we are absolutely going to play Dhoni and we are playing Pant, then we should let Pant keep. Dhoni should bowl a bit. He has tried bowling before and was reasonably good at it. He has a very astute cricketing brain and can play chess with the batsman. He should start bowling. Radical idea, maybe, but can be useful because Kedar is the only batsman who can bowl and we need someone else to be there in case he gets hurt. You absolutely need a backup bowler when one of the top 5 is having an off day!

In a WC-winning squad, you need at least 2 match-winners in your middle order and at this point, we have none and haven't had for a while. If we look back to 2011, we had 2 genuine match middle order match winners in Yuvi and Dhoni and Kohli himself at #4 was the young rising star.
If you think back through the entire WC cycle beginning Jan 2016, we have had 3 matches where the middle order had a winning contribution (Pandey in Australia once, Kedar against England once and Yuvi/Dhoni against England once).
My ideal combination would be to have
Gill, Kedar*, Pant, Hardik
* we should have tried Vihari or Krunal as the part-time spinner batsman but too late in the cycle now.

Dhoni is still a far better keeper than Pant. So, if we are playing him let him keep. That will add more value than him bowling.prasen9 wrote: ↑Fri Oct 26, 2018 2:54 am If we are absolutely going to play Dhoni and we are playing Pant, then we should let Pant keep. Re: West Indies in India, 2018
Sameer, perhaps that is true. I was hoping that Pant would resolve his bye-issues soon. His catching in England was okay for ODI standards.
Sin Hombre, it may be fine. However, that team had legitimate 7 batsmen with some experience. And, we had correctly identified the one junior batsman. Rarely have teams won the WC with players who have played less than 50 ODIs especially in the batting side. Maybe this is my perception. At least the Indian team was very experienced.
It is true that our middle order has not played any match-winning innings except the ones you mentioned; I have not checked though. But, the real number should be success:failure ratio. How many chances have they got when the first three all failed?

Jadhav is added to the team for last few ODI’s , only MSK can answer what changed from yesterday to today that he suddenly became fitter and eligible for selection..

Can anyone from the middle order step up here to support Kohli?
Not Rayadu. Pant and Dhoni next.
Bhuvi again proving to be a poor wicket-taking option in ODIs.

Not Pant. Soft dismissal. Almost got Kohli run out as well. Dhoni next.

Pant is batting one slot higher for what he should .. this team is setting itself perfectly for a failure in chasing come crucial matches in WC..

Not that Pant or Rayadu did well, but Dhoni again comfortably the worst of the middle order.
Way past time to throw this 40-year old out.

If and when Saha gets fit, get him in the one day team too. Remember his century in IPL final.

Re: West Indies in India, 2018
Great to see the team getting exposed against WI, with still 14 matches left to go to the WC.
This is Kohli at his prime, and for his legacy, he needs to start making these obvious selection calls.
At this moment, this team is 2 WC players (Kohli, Bumrah), 3 very good players (Rohit, Dhawan, Kuldeep), one serviceable player in Hardik and 5 others who are crap or a major question mark.
Still enough time to get the younger lot in.

Kohli goes , one man can’t carry 5-6 guys who don’t deserve a place all the time...
