A low scoring thriller is underway in one of the Ranji semifinals, with Vidarbha bowled out for 185 courtesy Mithun's 5/45, but Karnataka struggling at 36/3 in the first innings at the end of Day 1.
In the other semifinal, Bengal are 269/7 at the end of Day 1 (Sudip Chatterjee 83) in Jaipur against Delhi. Saha pulled out with illness (fever), so Shreevats Goswami (19*) holds the key to a more decent score on Day 2. Shami and Dinda are the key to the bowling response.

Delhi and Karnataka are on top of their respective Ranji semifinals. A 232 rum opening stand has helped take Delhi to 271/3 in response to Bengal’s first innings of 286. Gambhir made 127 before falling to Shami late in the day.

Led by Karun Nair’s 118, Karnataka are 294/8 in response to Vidarbha’s 185. Vidarbha’s Gurbani has 5 wickets, Umesh has 2.

Delhi inflicted an innings defeat on Bengal to make the Ranji final. Navdeep Saini picked up a 5-fer in the second innings to shoot Bengal out for 86. He has a nice ability to generate pace off the pitch. Bengal's bowling (other than Shami and Dinda) looked very weak, with the spinner Gani looking very ordinary. Shami picked 6 Delhi wickets with some aggressive bowling, and that seemed to have inspired Saini in particular to be particularly aggressive too. Left-arm pacer Khejroliya looked promising too.

Vidarbha are fighting hard against Karnataka, who had a big first innings lead. But Vidarbha made 313 in the second innings, setting Karnataka 198 to win outright -- and Umesh prised out Mayank Agarwal early. Karnataka are 59/3 now, with Karun Nair batting on 14. Exciting finish possible there with a day and a half left in the match.

Karnataka is 111/7 at end of the fourth-day play ... Still, need 87 runs for a win with 3 wickets in hands.

Yes, Vidarbha's other opening bowler, Gurbani (a typical domestic trundler who bowls effective seam and swing) has Karnataka on the run. Vidarbha have been a very effective side this year, and look set to be rewarded with a place in the Ranji final.

Rajneesh Gurbani is the story of the Ranji season. He won the QF against Kerala almost single-handedly, and now has mighty Karnataka on the hop with some brilliant bowling in the SF.
A little digging reveals he is anything but a "typical domestic trundler" (which I mistakenly labelled him based on Cricinfo's silly description of him as "right arm medium"). The reality is that Gurbani bowls regularly at over 140kph, and makes the ball skid off the pitch -- which enables him to frequently beat the bat. His stock ball is an outswinger, but he can bowl inswingers and often gets wickets off balls that jag back in or out sharply off the pitch, and he can also bowl a mean reverse-swinger with the older ball. He is thin and wiry (like the young Agarkar), which may be the reason why people seem to under-estimate him, but the reality is that he is the finished article -- a genuinely quick bowler who has all the abilities of a successful international bowler. After all, he has outshone his team-mate Umesh Yadav in every match they have played together.
The other interesting side-light about Gurbani is that he has completed a civil engineering degree (with a good first class, including finishing near the top in his final semester), which is the reason why he has appeared on the first class cricket firmament only now at the age of 24. But an exciting talent nonetheless!

It's a nailbiter between Vidharbha and Karnataka. What a fight-back by Vidharva. Will they make it?

Vidarbha won by 5 runs for their maiden Ranji final ... Gurbani took 7 wickets in the second inning and 12 wickets in the match ... Karnataka fought till the end as Mithun and Gopal scored 43 runs partnership for 9th wicket but in the end that wasn't enough as Gurbani took last 2 wickets in 3 runs.

Hats off to Vidarbha team and their coach Chandrakant Pandit.

Gurbani is a very special talent. I hope he is fast-tracked onto India A and perhaps even added to the team roster in SA if someone gets injured.

What a fightback by Vidharbha to win this thriller! Pandit seems like a good coach. I believe he has successfully coached the Mumbai team too.

Vidarbha have had a spectacular season, and fully deserve to be in the Ranji final. Bengal were having a stellar season until they met Vidarbha and got thrashed by an innings. And Vidarbha just kept winning in the league stage, then beat Kerala (the other upstart side of the year) in the QF, and have now pulled off this stunner in the SF. Vidarbha, although playing their first Ranji final, will be favourites against Delhi.

Gurbani took a hat-trick (and 4 wickets off 6 balls) to finish with 6/59 off 24.4 overs to give Vidarbha the whiphand in the Ranji Trophy final. Vidarbha are 206/4 in response to Delhi’s first innings of 295.

Wicketkeeper Wadkar made a century, as Vidarbha ended Day 3 on 528/7. Delhi were awful in the field, dropping innumerable catches and the Ranji Trophy is as good as won by Vidarbha with 2 days still left in the match.
