India domestic season 2017/18
The new domestic season has begun with the Duleep Trophy -- now reduced to matches between three teams of on-trial players (without any geographic affiliations). These are day-night fixtures with pink balls, so that makes them a bit different.
Murali Vijay (captaining India Green) has failed in both innings with the bat -- but has been his side's best bowler in both innings! 28-year-old Priyank Panchal (who had a breakout year last year with five Ranji centuries) has shone for India Red, scoring a century in both innings. So does he move above Vijay for contention for the opening spot? (If this is really a trial series, Panchal appears to be in much better form with the bat). Krishnappa Gowtham, the Karnataka offspinner, got 5 wickets for India Red, and Karn Sharma got 4.

Rahul should be a constant opener in tests. And, we should tag-team Dhawan and Vijay. Dhawan in sub-continental conditions and against weaker bowling to give quick runs, and Vijay in more difficult conditions.

In the Duleep Trophy, Baba Aparajith scored a 200 and leads the batting averages. Followed by Huda, Vihari (yes!), Panchal, Karthik, Nair, and Unadkat (with a 57 ). Whether we like it or not, Karthik has been very consistent with the bat. The question will be how is his keeping? With respect to batting, I would still hope that we at least give Iyer and Nair a fair run because they have been pretty consistent in the domestics throughout their career and I think Nair played a big role in the A-test win in RSA.
Among the bowlers, we have: Gowtham, Karn, Vijay, Rajpoot, Kaul in the top 5 by averages (qual: 4 wickets).

Prasen - minor correction - it was Baba Indrajith who got 200 and 24 not out for India Red vs. India Blue, not Baba Aparajith.

In the latest match, Parvez Rasool starred with the ball (5/70) to bowl out India Blue for 177 (Manoj Tiwary 78, Raina 40).

It is good to see Rasool back taking wickets. Although in ODIs, we decided to go with wrist-spinners, having a good off-spinner who can bat is useful to have in your back-pocket.

New Zealand A-team is visiting India. Iyer scored a century and Pant scored 67. Iyer is possibly leap-frogging Nair as the next in line for a test slot. I hope Rohit is not before them, but, knowing the team management and their familiarity with him, he will possibly be.

17 year old Prithwi Shaw made 154 in the Duleep Trophy final, his tournament debut. There's more competition for Rahul and Vijay for the test opening slot.

I think after Sri Lanka, Dhawan would be in the mix too. If it is at home and on an okay pitch, I would use Dhawan. Abroad, one may make a case for Vijay. Rahul needs to be given opportunities to keep maturing. So, he should be a constant. Yes, it is good that there are a few more openers coming up.

KKD Karthik scored a century again. He has become relentless like Badri.

Re: India domestic season 2017/18
How good is this Prithvi Shaw guy? He is from Mumbai, who possibly have the best junior setup in the country. He played for U-19 Mumbai, U-19 India, and he scored a century in his debut match in the Ranji semis in the second innings after TN had declared to lead Mumbai into the finals. In the finals, he was runout at 71 in the first innings. In the second innings, he scored 44. Now, this Duleep Trophy final century. He continued to get a 150+ score. If this guy is the next Tendulkar, we should seriously call him into the A-team. This seems phenomenal for a guy who is just 17!

Re: India domestic season 2017/18
He looks a special talent from what he is achieving at this age.
Takes my mind back to the Sachin's debut Ranji match which I had personally seen at Wankhede stadium. The buzz was already there about Sachin after his exploits in inter school cricket and for a Ranji league match against Gujarat, the stadium was packed. Sachin did not disappoint the crowd who had come to see him and hit a century. Eventually, Sachin turned to be even better than what everyone had though of at that time.
Prithvi Shaw appears to be following the same path although it may be too early to say so.

Washington Sundar (not quite 18 himself) starred with 11 wickets in the Duleep final. More competition for Ashwin.

Re: India domestic season 2017/18
The new Ranji season starts tomorrow. They have discarded the upper and lower division, and have just four groups of teams -- the top two from each group making the QF. Matches will be played home and away, so the neutral venues from last year have been wisely discarded.
