India in Sri Lanka, July-August 2017
India will play 3 tests in Sri Lanka, starting July 26th.
The India test squad is Kohli (c), Vijay, Rahul, Pujara, Rahane, Rohit Sharma (replacing Karun Nair), Ashwin, Jadeja, Saha (wk), Kuldeep, Bhuvi, Shami, Ishant, Umesh, Hardik Pandya, Abhinav Mukund.
A bit odd to be taking 5 pacers and just 3 spinners (and no backup 'keeper) on a 3-test tour of SL.

Rahul can keep wickets in an emergency and you can always fly someone over in an emergency.PKBasu wrote: ↑Tue Jul 11, 2017 3:58 pm India will play 3 tests in Sri Lanka, starting July 26th.

Re: India in Sri Lanka, July-August 2017
The reason teams always take reserve 'keepers is that the specialist position is difficult to fill, and a 'keeper is more liable to be injured than others. Flying someone out at short notice is an inoptimal situation (especially for such a short tour), and Rahul doesn't have regular practice as a 'keeper in first class cricket.
Picking Parthiv ahead of Mukund would have addressed a number of issues effectively.

Agree and Parthiv did very well in the limited chances that he got when Saha was injured.
Mukund hasn't done anything significant and didn't even take the catches that came his way.
Also, a leggie instead of the 5th pacer would have been a balanced selection...
However, with the way Sri Lanka are playing of late, any team selected should be able to do the job.

Yawn! No interest in a boring series. Hopefully the rains take out one or two of the matches. Not that anyone goes to watch test matches in SL anymore.

Vijay is hurt and replaced by Dhawan. I suppose Mukund will open then with Dhawan as backup. I am okay with that since Dhawan has not been in good form in the recent past if I recall correctly.

Sri Lanka are a fragile side, dependent on just one bowler (Herath) in tests. It is a bit of a waste playing a 3-match series there, but SL-India seems to be a very strong cricket relationship. That our ODI side lost to SL in the Champions Trophy was actually quite disgraceful.

Sri Lanka is a mean competitor at home. Don't ever under estimate them regardless of their apparent fragility.PKBasu wrote: ↑Tue Jul 18, 2017 9:36 am Sri Lanka are a fragile side, dependent on just one bowler (Herath) in tests. As for CT loss, we lost to Asian teams, who pretty much rendered our spin strength useless (as we do most of the times to Asian teams too). Actually, India is a pretty fragile team, less than it used to be, but still more than it needs to be.
Finally, I'd never bat second if I win a toss in a final if I were an Indian captain.

Re: India in Sri Lanka, July-August 2017
Sri Lanka just lost to Zimbabwe 2-3 in ODI but won the one-off test today scoring almost 400 runs in the fourth innings (5th highest all time chase and highest in Sri Lanka, IIRC).
Asian teams are highly motivated and have an extra sense of self-belief when they play India. I'd not under-estimate Sri Lankans' ability at home even though we have had their number lately.

Sri lanka lost a test to Bangladesh. Even though they won the next one to square series, its an insult.
This series will test our ability to play spin!

Asinine to pick Hardik Pandya over Kuldeep Yadav for the first test.
The Ravi Shastri era gets off to a typically ludicrous start: politics and more politics all the way.

Re: India in Sri Lanka, July-August 2017
Dhawan gets a chance only because Rahul is injured (only god and Shastri know why Mukund is to be preferred to Dhawan), and Shikhar makes a spectacular 190 off 168 balls. Kohli fails again, to somewhat undo the big advantage created by Dhawan.

399/3 on Day 1 is a reasonable start to the series. The bizarre selection decision continues to bother me, and the threat of Rohit being brought in looms (especially with Shastri as coach).

Re: India in Sri Lanka, July-August 2017
If we wanted an all-rounder, it should have been Jayant Yadav. Is he even in the team? We should consider Ashwin + Jadeja as batting allrounders in the sub-continent. So, we could have played Kuldeep. The other iffy choice was Umesh for Bhuvi. Is that the right choice given the pitch?
