Really idiotic not to have sent Deepti Sharma in at #5. India just needed to play normally at that stage (191/3), and the keeper Verma played an asinine shot (but she shouldn't have been batting in that position).

To be fair, Veda did score ~35 at run a ball which eased the pressure on Raut and extended her innings by about crucial 10-15 runs. The mistake was sending Verma but these are ifs and buts, if Verma had scored about 15 runs, we wouldn't be discussing!

There was just one team that dominated the tournament. Yes they lost the opening game to India, but they were rarely troubled after that. It is a fair assessment. Kudos to India for the excellent second place finish, but we did lose league games to Australia & South Africa, whereas England had just the one loss in the whole tourney.

India thrashed England in the first match. And India were completely in control of the final until the last 3-4 overs (when a young team panicked, partly because the captain/management made a very poor decision with the batting order -- a la Venkat at the Oval in 1979, when he sent Kapil up the order and messed up a pretty simple chase). India had a hiccup in the middle of the tournament, but if India had not panicked in the final, it would be India that would have been considered the deserved winners. Under the circumstances, I thought the gloating by the English was wildly overdone. Today, the FT led off with this on the front page (quite remarkable for a business paper: the only other sporting event that has qualified recently is Federer winning his 19th Slam), and the BBC had it on its World News (radio) for much of the day.

So, our women have losses against NZ and England now. If he would have beat England today, we would have shut them out of the tournament. Now, they have a new lease of life. We are third in table now but have matches left against top 2- Australia and South Africa. We have to win at least 1 of those 2 matches and match against Bangaladesh to qualify for semi finals.

Huge disappointment. Our top order is just not productive. Mandhana is the only one who is reliable. This was as easy a match as it can be with England on a low and on the verge of being bundled out. The loss at the last final should have been a motivation enough, but it was not to be.

We will lose v Australia. Any white team is too much for us in most sports.

Only hope of getting into the semis is beating RSA. 50/50 chance there. Anyway, we aren't good enough to challenge the top teams.

Fully expected a loss v. this really unfit English team.

Really bad performance against England. They still play like amateurs. Probably most of them are. Even 200 would have been enough for England. They folded in 33 overs. I think Mthali is playing 1 extra world cup than she should have. They should still be able to beat Bangladesh. They need to beat one of Australia and South Africa which looks difficult on current form.

Pakistan took down West Indies which is a good result for India as WI now drops down into the mix of teams India is competing with to qualify. Australia and SA are through to semis while India is now battling England, WI, and NZ for the final 2 spots.

Good luck to team India who has to absolutely beat Bangladesh today to stay in the running.

Massive thrashing of Bangladesh (by 110 runs) takes India to 3rd on the table, but a tough final pool match against 2nd placed SA is still to come (on Sunday). That is a must-win for India to make the SF. Australia have effectively qualified already. England are one win behind India, but have a game in hand -- they play Pakistan and Bangladesh in the final two pool matches.

Our women did a lot better in the last World Cup -- beating England in the first match, and only losing 2 matches (Aus, SA) in the pool stage, eventually losing a close final. This time, there have been 3 losses already (including to hosts New Zealand). NZ are almost out of the tournament, so our seemingly-brilliant decision to tour NZ just before the World Cup seemed to have back-fired. Our team lost almost every match to NZ before the tournament, and the early defeat to NZ in this World Cup then followed. Let us hope we beat South Africa comprehensively, make the SF, and then keep soaring thereafter.
