Champions Trophy, 2017
Starting a thread for the Champions Trophy this summer.
KKD Karthik really lit a fire in the domestic List-A tournament. He may be a candidate for the Champions Trophy team in England as a reserve wicket-keeper cum batsman.
Among those who scored over 350 runs or so, the highest averages belonged to Kohli, Karthik, Gaikwad, Poddar, Easwaran, Kedar Jadhav, Dhoni. Gurkeerat and Rayudu played well too.

Re: Champions Trophy, 2017
Australia chose their team. What is remarkable is that among the batsmen, they have chosen the big hitters. So Aaron Finch, with his relatively poor ODI average is in the side, while Bailey, Shaun Marsh, and Callum Ferguson, with their better averages are not. No Aussie batsman has a SR under 85. They did not have this much of a penchant for big hitters before. Now, it seems a deliberate change. I think with the run inflation in ODIs, you need people with a higher SR than what we tolerated before. If you have flatter wickets, less fielders outside the circle (where big hitters would be caught), we see that batsmen often are scoring more. If they are scoring more and you don't really run the risk of losing a lot of wickets, then you can try to hit more and bat faster. Basically, that is the reason SR in T20Is are more than in ODIs. Earlier on, you could choose the top 7 bats (with one wk) based on average and that would be a pretty good selection. Now, you pretty much need #7 to be more of a bowler than say Yuvraj was. So, a genuine all-rounder is more important.
On the other hand, on the bowling side, Starc, Hazlewood, and Cummins select themselves if fit. They chose Pattinson over Nathan Coulter-Nile. Pattinson's record is horrible while Coulter-Nile's is excellent. But, both have played only 15-16 matches, small sample size. So, essentially, they went with their test bowler. Stoinis is the all-rounder and deserves it.

Re: Champions Trophy, 2017
This is the best time for karthik to show their skills on ground if they played any single match in the champion trophy 2017. Dainesh karthik is also a good batsmen. they will be played as a batsmen instead of wicket keeper. cricket is not cricket without India. team in CT 2017 win this Trophy. My favurite team is India and Hoping that this time Again India with this Champion trophy with in the captaincy of Virat kohli.. Love you Indian Team.. Saw you In Champion trophy Live in Ground..

Re: Champions Trophy, 2017
So selectors selected familier 15 players for Champions trophy ... So no daring decision of including Rishabh Pant and Kuldeep Yadav in the team.
Indian Team - Virat Kohli (capt), R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Shikhar Dhawan, MS Dhoni (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Kedar Jadhav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Amit Mishra, Manish Pandey, Hardik Pandya, Ajinkya Rahane, Umesh Yadav, Yuvraj Singh, Mohammed Shami

Which players from that squad would Unadkat or Kuldeep replace? Shami & Mishra?

I would have taken Unadkat for variety. He would replace Shami if he has not come back to form. Or else, he would replace Umesh.

Re: Champions Trophy, 2017
Shikhar Dhawan is our #1 ODI opener. If you have to argue, argue about Rohit Sharma. Dhawan averages more than Rohit and is faster than Rohit significantly.Omkara wrote:Shikhar Dhawan in but no Gambhir?
Actually, if you have to argue, argue about Rahane. God knows why he is in the ODI team. By all accounts, the wickets in England are going to be flat and not swinging. When there is no swing, Rahane is useless. He cannot rotate the strike and he cannot hit consistently. He has to learn to play List-As first before he can be in the ODI team. He has a poor record for a top-order bat in ODIs. How long should we carry him before he learns to bat in ODIs? Rohit and Dhawan should come in before Rahane.
I do not know why you are picking on Dhawan and not picking on Rahane or even Rohit.
Gambhir, on the other hand, is too old. The selectors are looking forward. When given chances to make a comeback, Gambhir failed. His being good in T20I domestics is not that much of a reason for him to be in the ODI team. Gambhir did nothing of note in the domestic List-As. (And, I am a Gambhir fan.)

Nothing particular against Dhawan. Have similar complaints against Rohit and Rahane.

Re: Champions Trophy, 2017
Rohit Sharma is the blue-eyed boy. He has shown no consistent form in the IPL, and skipped the List A season domestically, so technically he is unqualified to be in the team. But the BCCI is in such turmoil at the moment that the selectors are probably just playing it safe, trying to save their skins with the least controversial selection possible (one that involves very little change).
I like the bowling attack -- Bhuvi, Shami, Umesh, Bumrah (3 to play) providing the pace (plus Pandya as allrounder), and one or two of Jadeja/Ashwin/Mishra providing the spin option. (I would have picked Kuldeep Yadav ahead of Mishra, but the latter is the incumbent in the ODI side, which is fair enough after his match-winning performance in the last ODI against NZ; I just wonder whether Mishra will be any use on any English ground other than the Oval).

Re: Champions Trophy, 2017
Mishra is also a horrible fielder and has to be hidden in the field or he will give many singles away. Kuldeep is a good fielder.
Rohit Sharma has played 5 ODIs in the last year and scored at 24.6. The year before that, he was great in Australia and in India vs RSA. So, a bad 5 matches and injury is to be weighed against his career record and doing well in the previous year and in Aus.

Re: Champions Trophy, 2017
Karthik got into the team because Manish Pandey is out with an injury.
My first XI should be: Dhawan, Rohit, Kohli, Dhoni, Yuvraj, Kedar, Hardik, Bhuvi, Shami.
Okay, that is 9. For the rest two, we have to figure out if we want a batsman or two spinners or two pacers or some combination of the same. I would choose Karthik and Jadeja.
So: Dhawan, Rohit, Kohli, Dhoni, Yuvraj, Kedar, Jadeja, Hardik, Ashwin, Bhuvi, Shami. When rapid hitting is required, Hardik can be floated up the order.
