Utter stupidity from Pujara (and Rahul). Hesitating after you've traversed a third of the pitch is always fatal, especially with Maxwell prowling the covers.

Checking on the MCG 1981, Australia had to chase 143 to win and they folded for 83 (I remembered the 83, but thought they were chasing around 110). India's chase today is far more manageable.

Close call for Rahul, but he ran without hesitating and that saved him from Maxwell's direct hit. Stop the stupid running!!

Re: Test series in 2017
Bridgetown 1997 was the truly disastrous chase: India needed 120, but every batsman played defensively rather than naturally, and the team folded for 81.
We are avoiding that fate today by batting naturally (with a tinge of aggression) rather than going into shells. Rahane and Rahul doing the right thing so far.

Rahane with a very good cameo here.
Also a very impressive captaincy debut for him. He was a bit lacklustre in the last match as the stand-in captain when Kohli was off the field but a complete turnaround here.

Re: Test series in 2017
Rahane has captained India better than Kohli did throughout the series. Surprisingly he is much more aggressive as captain than Kohli, although the latter is the naturally more aggressive batsman. Loved his use of Umesh; I thought one of the big mistakes Kohli kept making was not handing the new ball to Umesh. This was a sign of overcoaching or overthinking. Rahane seemed to be free of this, and Umesh and Bhuvi responded superbly to their captain's confidence.
Unexpectedly India now has a good stand-in captain, a surfeit of spin options, a superbly mature opening batsman (Rahul), three world-class middle order batsman, and 2-3 terrific fast bowlers, and a superb 'keeper-batsman. We couldn't ask for too much more.

Re: Test series in 2017
Ashwin mentions that he has been injured throughout the series, that would explain his lacklustre performances.
Quite an impressive comeback for India with Ashwin struggling with injuries, Shami injured completely and Kohli struggling with form and then breaking his shoulder.

Great to win the series, especially after the dreadful performance in the 1st test. Several special performances throughout this series and during the entire season. Jadeja has been outstanding.
Surprisingly, today's chase proved much easier than I expected. However, these Aussies are tough to beat. Compared to the England series, this was so much harder.

What an exhilarating test series. Really a credit to the game, although one should've expected that with the world #1 playing the #2.
Really looking forward to India beating South Africa at the start of the next season. Need to preserve Shami and Umesh for that tour.

Re: Test series in 2017
Aus did play well but i am pretty sure if they toured us at the start of a season scoreline would have been lot different ...Most of our guys must be very tired after a long season and to come back how we did specially without Ashwin at his best , Shami , Kohli ( indifferent form, injury ) should signal for good things to come in future ..
For Aus , they simply need to move on from Shaun Marsh ...While Maxwell did well on the chances he got he might still not find a place in 11...At 37 Warner doesn't have lot to offer for too long... Reinshaw and Handscomb does offer hope for future along with pace attack which is pretty well covered..
I hope likes of Kohli, Umesh , Ashwin, Jadeja gives IPL a miss and use these couple of months to recover ...
Well done guys for a wonderful home season ...

Re: Test series in 2017
Vijay is the only question-mark in the side -- prone to injury, and inconsistent with his batting. The selectors have been very harsh with Dhawan -- in picking Mukund over him. But he should be in the mix for selection as test opener.

Karun Nair also needs to improve his fielding standard and need to show more patience in the selection of shots.
Re: Test series in 2017
Close catching in general was poor. There were far too many chances dropped in the slips. Umesh suffered the worst.

Re: Test series in 2017
I think Karun Nair will not be selected for another test for awhile. Neither his batting nor his close-in fielding was convincing. He played this test only because Kohli was injured.
