Indian domestic season 2016/17

Post by PKBasu »

The first round of Ranji Trophy matches for this year were played last week, and then next round of matches begin tomorrow (13th) in neutral venues.

Mumbai vs TN was a marquee match that was marred by an extremely bowler friendly pitch at Lahli. Mumbai won a low-scoring thriller by 2 wickets (after bowling TN out for 87 on the first morning). Dhawal Kulkarni (4/31 and 6/47) starred with the ball for Mumbai. Mukund made 56 in the second innings, Aparajith made 16 and 28*, Indrajith top-scored with 28 in the first innings! TN's best bowler was first-change Vignesh (5/41 and 4/29), while Aswin Crist (3/51 and 4/43) bowled well with the new ball. Tare made 48 for Mumbai in the first innings, but Abhishek Nayar (45*) took them to victory in the second innings.

Delhi inflicted an innings defeat on Assam, with Sangwan making a century and taking 7 wickets in the match. Abu Nechim was Assam's best bowler.

Madhya Pradesh inflicted an innings defeat on UP (with Raina injured, and not batting). Harpreet Singh made a double century for MP, and Gaurav Yadav (4/44 and 2/50) and Sakure (1/17 and 6/40) starred with the ball.

Aaron (4/47 and 2/37) and Ashish Kumar (3/33 and 3/44) bowled Jharkhand to an outright win over Maharastra.

Bengal were the only side that didn't play in the first round, and begin their campaign against UP in Jaipur tomorrow.

Sangwan took 5 and not 7 wickets. Still a commendable performance from him, he should be tried out in some Duleep trophy matches first. This Sakure guy could also be someone to watch out for. From the Lahli pitch no reasonable evaluation can be made of a medium pacer's actual worth, but good work nevertheless by Dhawal Kulkarni. I would still only keep him from ODIs and not Tests.

TN seem to have run into another devilish pitch, and are 84/8 against Railways, for whom left arm medium pacer Deepak Bansal has 4/22.

TN was not good last year and are probably not good this year as well. I don't know what is wrong.

They are missing Ashwin and Vijay, but there is a lot of talent in the team -- including Mukund at the top of the order, Aparajith and Indrajith, DK, plus several good fast bowlers. They were genuinely unlucky to play at Lahli first up against holders Mumbai, and the pitch at Bilaspur seems to have also been tailored to swing and seam bowling this morning. I think it's just bad luck.

Yuvraj Singh 128* for Punjab against MP. Jiwanjot has just fallen for 61 and Punjab are 207/3 in the 66th over.

Bengal are 231/2 after 68 overs. 21-year-old Abhimanyu Easwaran, a fine opening batsman, is 104*. Chatterjee made 73. Skipper M Tiwary will probably come in at #5.

Baroda are 215/5 against Mumbai. Skipper Irfan Pathan has just joined 'keeper Pinal Shah (50*), after Yusuf fell for 41.

Odisha are 174/5 against Saurashtra, with skipper Sandeep Pattnaik unbeaten on 103.

Karnataka are 195/3 against Jharkhand, with opener Samarth 92*. Karun Nair fell for 74.

Pankaj Singh (4/29) has reduced Assam to 136/7 but RK Das is 50*.

Without Sangwan, the Delhi attack has been taken to the cleaners by Maharashtra, who are 232/2, with opener Gugale 129* and the prolific Bawne 87*.

Bawne is a sad story. Because of his age fudging, he has been banned for life unofficially, it seems. He has a stellar domestic records. He has a very good temperament and I heard a decent technique. But, he will possibly never be given an A-team slot. In 2013, he played for India U-23, but, sometime after that Dravid spoke out against age fudging. I completely agree that it is wrong and banning him softly is a good precedent. But, a life ban may be too harsh. The only way to find out if that is actually true or not is for Bawne to set the domestics on fire this season. And, then let us see what happens.

The other interesting case is his fellow 23-year old Hanuma Vihari. He got into the A-team but never got a game. He did play a very good innings in the Duleep Trophy final a couple of years ago. And, he has played in English county cricket for a year to hone his game. I think he deserves a good run in the A-team to see what he can do.

The Delhi bowlers' leather hunt continues, with Maharashtra on 537/2 at tea on the second day (Swapnil Gugale 298*, Ankit Bawne 214*).

Manoj Tiwary made 110 as Bengal reached 466, before reducing UP to 33/2 at tea on Day 2.

Yuvraj fell for 177 as Punjab ended on 378 (Ishwar Pandey 8/102). MP are 98/4 in response (Gony 3/16).

Herwadkar's 82* has taken Mumbai to 212/6 in response to Baroda's 305.

Odisha have taken a first innings lead after bowling out Saurashtra for 195 (Basant Mohanty 4/50). Odisha are 16/1 in I2, leading by 49.

Karnataka 486/5 (Samarth 205*, Binny 97) against Jharkhand.

Gugale (351*) and Bawne (258*) put on 594 in an unbroken 3rd wicket stand -- the second highest partnership in first-class history. Had they batted on until the end of the day, they would surely have made the 31 runs to break the world record. Instead they declared, and Delhi are 21 for no loss at stumps on Day 2.

Given that this is probably a dead flat wicket, I don't see why they didn't go for the record. Is there any chance they are going to force a result?

Conventional cricketing wisdom is that if you give batsmen who have fielded for two whole days 10-15 overs at the end of the day, usually they may get out to a tired shot. While there may not be a result in this match, a first innings lead can be obtained. Maharashtra believed that they have enough runs to get the first innings lead points. Their probability of getting the lead is better if they can get tired batsmen at the top of the order out cheaply than after they have rested. That is why they declared. In hindsight, it did not turn out that way. But, they need to be commended for strategic, selfless thinking.

Yes, I thoroughly agree if that were the approach. However, they waited until only 5 overs were left at the end of the day. That's what seems silly. Either declare with 10-15 overs left, or bat out the day & get your record.
