Aus u-19 make 225/8 in the junior World Cup final. India have a decent chance to overhaul this total, especially if Unmukt Chand gets going (he is due!).

Sandeep Sharma (4/54) again the main bowler, with Aparajith and Ravikant chipping in with a wicket each.

225/8 is an above par score at Townsville. So India have some chasing to do but it is well within their reach. Right now they are 40/1 in 8.1 overs and as PKB rightly says, Unmukt is due.

98/4 in 26th over. Not looking too promising.
5th wicket pair still going but scoring rate has dropped. 106 off 19 overs. We need a few good overs to reduce the pressure.
Patel keeping the strike and scoring 1 run an over. We are now looking at 6 an over. That seems too high on this pitch.

Unmukt Chand and Smit Patel carry India to victory!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

India U19: 227/4 off 47.4 overs (Unmukt 111* and Smit 62*)

Super batting from these two even while the run rate crossed 6 per over.

Unmukt Chand is Man of the Match in the final, as expected, with his match-winning unbeaten century.

But Aus captain Bosisto (who top-scored for his side in the final) is Man of the Tournament. I think Baba Aparajith should have been the Man of the Tournament; he bowled a tidy spell even in the final, and scored an important 33 runs to stabilize the innings after the fall of the first wicket early. He did well throughout the tournament, and especially so in the QF and SF.

Brilliant partnership between Chand & Patel. Won quite easily in the end, but Patel seemed to be struggling in the middle overs.
Great to beat the Aussies in Oz.

Congratulation to our u-19 team for becoming World Champion.

This was our third u-19 world championship ... Now we r tied with Australia in total titles ... First time Australia lost in the final of u-19 World championship.

Hats off to our captain Unmukt Chand, who wasn't in the form before final but scored timely unbeaten century ... In that he hit 7 fours and 6 sixes ... Smit Patel also supported well with scoring unbeaten 62 ... Before that Sandeep Sharma bowled superb spell to pick 4 wickets ... Overall team performance by our 'Young'istan!!!

From our 2000 winning team, we got Kaif and Yuvraj. From the 2008 team, we got Kohli. Who will it be from the 2012? Unmukt? Harmeet? Aparajith? Sandeep Sharma?

Yuvi burst onto international cricket shortly after the under-19 World Cup win -- with that brilliant 84 for India against Australia in the QF of the Champions Trophy (sometimes called the ICC Knock-out Trophy). Kaif made his debut soon afterwards (and was always thought of as a future India captain on the basis of leading the under-19 side to triumph). Ajay Ratra also played test cricket from that side, and Reetinder Sodhi (who had also captained India under-16 to the under-16 world cup triumph) played a few ODIs.

From the 2008 winning side, we have Kohli (captain) who is already vice-captain of India in ODIs, and an established member of Team India in all forms of the game. And Ravinder Jadeja was the first to burst onto the international side, and also the first to fade out (hopefully, not permanently). Saurabh Tiwary has played a few ODIs, and Abhinav Mukund has played Tests. I remember Pradeep Sangwan looking like a much more promising bowler than Southee, but it is the latter who has become a Test and ODI bowler for NZ, while Sangwan struggles to make even the North Zone side. Ajitesh Argal, the other opening bowler of that under-19 champion side (and Man of the Match in the final) has barely played first-class cricket at all, and Tanmay Srivastava (top-scorer in the final) is a decent but not dominant Ranji player.

But winning the junior World Cup is not necessarily the best predictor of which under-19 side will produce India players. Almost everyone who plays for India now came through the under-19 ranks (except Dhoni and Ashwin, I think).

Wow, high praise indeed from Chappelli for Harmeet Singh ("the best spinner in any Test side bar England"). Wow!! He is basically saying that Harmeet should immediately replace Ojha for the next test, and is a better bowler (potentially) than Ashwin!

That may be a bit premature, but Harmeet's initial forays into first-class cricket suggest he is a special talent. Ironically, Iqbal Abdulla is probably ahead of him for selection to the Mumbai side (and Iqbal was the other spinner in the 2008 champion side, along with Jadeja). In Mumbai newspapers, I have read about this kid's special talents (with the obvious comparisons to Bedi being drawn). But it is striking that he didn't play a single Ranji match for Mumbai in the last season...

If Ian Chappell is right ("India are the envy of all the other teams; their best young batsmen...are technically far superior to those of all the other Test-playing countries'"), then it is surprising how much India struggled in this World Cup. We shouldn't forget that India were beaten by West Indies in the first match, and scraped past Pakistan by 1 wicket in the QF. The SF and, especially, the final were more comprehensive victories -- but the team took some time getting used to the wickets in Australia, which argues for giving youngsters more exposure to those conditions early in their young careers.
