Re: Indian U19 Team thread ....
India beat Australia (their opponents in the final) by 100 runs in the first match, with Prithwi Shaw making 94 and both Mavi and Nagarkoti picking up 3 wickets each. Steve Waugh's son Austin made just 6 and took 1/64 in the match.
Two of Australia's best players are NRIs! Jason Sangha (captain) and Param Uppal (born in Chandigarh).

Yes, Ranadeb Bose. He was given a very raw deal. Like Subroto Banerjee. He was tall indeed. But it seems Porel is more hit-the-deck than Bose.

By the way, Subroto Banerjee played cricket for Bihar for many years before making the switch to Bengal. Similar in that respect to Shute and Montu Banerjee (in the 1930s), and to his team-mate Saba Karim. And all three Banerjees played only a solitary test for India, despite taking 3 or more wickets in an innings on test debut.

Re: Indian U19 Team thread ....
Subroto took 3/47, Shute Banerjee took 4/54 and Montu Banerjee took 4/120 in their best innings with the ball (all in their only tests for India). Subroto didn't bowl in the second innings of his only test, at the SCG in 1992.
Shute Banerjee's story was the most poignant. He went on the 1936 and 1946 tours of England but didn't play a test, despite the fact that India only had two pacers in the 1946 squad -- and Shute had match-winning 4-fers in victories over two county sides. (His most memorable achievement was a last-wicket partnership of 249 with Chandu Sarwate, with both making centuries -- the only time in first class history that both #10 and 11 have made tons).
He forced himself into the test side at the age of 37, with a match-winning 7/67 in the second innings for East Zone, enabling his side to defeat the Windies by 10 wickets (their only loss on that tour of India). At the Brabourne stadium in his only test, Shute Banerjee took 4/54 in the second innings in what Wisden described as an "inspired spell". India were set 361 to win, and ended on 355/8. Shute helped speed up the chase, hitting the only 6 of the match in a quick 8 at number 8, but Phadkar and Ghulam Ahmed narrowly failed to take India to victory in the final overs. It would have been India's first test victory!
Once in Jamshedpur (when Shute was 39), Delhi needed 49 to win on the final day against Bihar at Jamshedpur, with 8 wickets in hand. Shute bowled Bihar to victory, taking a hat-trick along the way. He continued to play for Bihar until he was 49 years old, although he joked that he provided more "moral rather than material support" for the side in the later years. A one-test wonder who was nonetheless a legend!

Re: Indian U19 Team thread ....
To get back to the topic of the thread, India have to be odds-on favourites to win the junior World Cup on Saturday, having beaten Australia by 100 runs in the group stage. A final will have added pressure, but I think this India under-19 side is remarkably mature and talented, and should be able to bring home the trophy for the fourth time.

Stupid captaincy to not have enough slips to begin with and then go with no slips. Bowling is your strength and conditions are favourable and you give it away

Today, the fielding wasn't up to the mark but they managed to bundle out Aussies in 216 as a bowling unit.

Looks like this will be a comfortable win.
Reminiscent of Aus 2003 in how dominant this team has been.

Also, the more I watch of Shaw, the clearer is it that he is a very poor batsman technically. Ridiculously so given the hype.
Re: Indian U19 Team thread ....
This is very interesting. Shaw has performances to back the hype. I have not seen him play. I wonder how he has scored runs? Is he a Sehwag type of player?

Re: Indian U19 Team thread ....
With the flaws he has , in terms of how he moves his backfoot ..it is not such an issue on flat tracks which probably explains his scores ..he does have a decent hand eye coordination...this kid Gill can play man ....what a treat to watch him bat...

Re: Indian U19 Team thread ....
So, 4th junior world cup title for us after 2000, 2008 and 2012. Interestingly out of 2012 winning squad not a single player is anywhere close to senior India team selection. I think Unmukt Chand was the best bet but has disappointed so far.
Of the 2008 squad, 3 are in present India squad- Kohli, Jadeja and Manish Pandey.
Hope we get more to the senior team from current junior squad.

Re: Indian U19 Team thread ....
Shaw has issues with being cemented on the crease, an unstable backfoot trigger movement and a tendency to flail at balls on the 5th stump line. And is poor at running between the wickets to boot.
He does have a very good repertoire of shots and excellent hand-eye coordination so on pitches where the ball isn't doing much, he might still turn out to be an excellent player. I do feel his technical weaknesses will get exploited when he has to face the likes of Starc and Rabada even on flat pitches.

Re: Indian U19 Team thread ....
A blast from the past! Sometimes it is interesting to go back to an old post and see what people said. This is the first time people on this forum talked about Kuldeep Yadav or did not talk about him. Interesting that a whole lot of other players were mentioned as promising whereas he was not. And, none of the others have played test cricket. Sometimes the future is hard to foresee. Except if you are Pat Cummins. He is still there and doing as he was expected after all his injuries ...prashanthm wrote: ↑Wed Apr 04, 2012 7:18 am Teams: Aus U-19, Eng U-19, NZ U-19, Ind U-19

Unmukt Chand is captaining the Ind U19 side for the 2nd time (1st time on an overseas tour). This should give a good platform for the guys for 2012 U19 WC.
Indian squad -
Unmukt Chand (c), Akshdeep Nath (vc), Baba Aparajith, Prashant Chopra, Kumar Deobrat, Harmeet Singh, Akhil Herwadkar, Rush Kalaria, Kuldeep Yadav, Kamal Passi, Smit Patel (wk), Sandeep Sharma, Mohsin Sayyed, Vikas Mishra, Manan Vohra and Vijay Zol
Pat Cummins may play selectively for the Aus U19 squad.
Players to watch out for
Ind - Chand, Akshdeep, Aparajith, Sandeep Sharma, Vijay Zol (the guy who scored 451)
Aus - Cummins

And about a year ago, see the posts above for what we were saying about Prithvi Shaw. It may well come out to be true but he has, at least for now, forced himself into the test team and bullied weak attacks on flat tracks. ...
