^^Yeah, I think it was popular as I had just arrived in the US. Hasselhoff (?) was the lead guy, IIRC. It had a talking car, Kitt, which had its replica at Disneyland, that I asked a question, which I thought it could not answer. Like, where was I born. Don’t remember if it answered correctly. I don’t know how it could though.

Prasen has ranted about this name before and my mind always went to this TV show even then.

I had never paid attention to this until now that none of the IPL team names are “Indian.” Unlike, say PSL, or even other Indian sports leagues. Similarly, most prominent brand names in clothing, cosmetics, etc. are not Indian either. Does having a western (English) name create a sense of sophistication or class that the Indian one doesn’t, which is ostensibly product marketing teams’ rationale behind this branding strategy?
:Offtopic:

Among the more ridiculous foreign-sounding brands of clothing are Louis Phillippe and Peter England -- both brought to you by Aditya Birla group! And they weren't because of M&A (merger and acquisition), but actually invented by that Indian company.

:Offtopic: Allen-Solly may be another one of such clothing/accessory brands.

Looks like these are really old UK brands (1800s) that have been acquired by the Birla group. So, not invented by them. See the various links at this google search URL:

hey tried to ape the NFL with cheerleaders and names. What on earth is a Knight Rider? They actually made this up. A Knight is a rider. So, what exactly is a Solder-Riding-On-A-Horse Rider? This naming is stupid. Idiots tried to ape the American names and did not have a basic grasp on grammar either. Nowhere did I hear or does there exist something called a Knight Rider.
I believe it's origins is an iconic American TV series. Not used in the US for sports teams, as it would likely encounter trademark/branding challenges in US.
Thanks for that Arjun. Did not know. Either way, it sounds redundant.

Update: Checked it out. 1982 TV series. Much before my time in the U.S. And, anyway, if I watch TV, I watch sports. I checked it out because the redundancy bothered me. Turns out there was a guy called Knight who was a rider. That is why Knight Rider came into being. So, maybe some old American consultant was used to come up with these names that smacks of the NFL team names.

One name that would have been fun if the Chennai team chose Tamil Tigers. The tiger is our national animal after all. ;-)

Lucknow could be Nawabs. Anyway, local names would have been better than all these western origin names.

Yes, it looks like Allen Solly and Peter England are old UK brands -- the latter having started in Ireland when it was still fully part of the UK.

But Louis Philippe was indeed invented by Aditya Birla group in 1989, it seems.

Nary a word on RCB win? I was hoping Kohli will retire from all forms of cricket after this win, but it seems he wants to continue to play at least in IPL.

I want Kohli and Rohit to continue in ODIs. Don't care about IPL that much.

Indian XI by impact/match, at least 50% of the matches:

Krunal, Sai, Kuldeep, Bumrah, PK, SkAY, Suryavanshi,Yashasvi, Axar, Gill, Digvesh Rathi.

Drop Rathi and need a keeper. Best keeper-bat: Rahul

We have two pacers: Bumrah, PK

Spinning allrounder: Krunal, Axar

Spinner: Kuldeep

Batters: Sai, SkAY, Suryavanshi, Yashasvi, Gill.

If you want a third pacer that will be an allrounder. I think the best was Hardik ... drop Gill to get him in.

Good to see Suryavanshi emerge as well as Rathi. A few others too although they faded a bit towards the end. Priyansh, etc.

Top non-capped players:

Suryavanshi, Rathi, Harpreet Brar, Ayush Mhatre, Vipraj Nigam, Priyansh Arya, Vaibhav Arora, Prabhsimran, Ashwani Kumar, Kamboj, Yash Dayal.

Ask Prabhsimran to keep regularly.
