As the other sports forums seem to have taken old to some respect, well here is a cricket forum. NOTE: This forum will be heavily moderated and can be revoked at any time is discussions go out of hand.
Apart from Whatmore, there are atleast six names doing the rounds as the likely replacement for Chappell: Tom Moody, Sunil Gavaskar, Mohinder Amarnath, Sandeep Patil, Viv Richards and John Wright.
I think the coach should be Indian. There are enough great former players with great cricket acumen. They can probably bring in other coaches to complement / develop aspects that are missing. For example, like Pakistan hiring a baseball coach to improve their fielding. I would add a fitness coach. Australia went on a 2 week bootcamp style training in the bush last year and after that they have been unstoppable for the most part. I think that type of training not only develops mind and body, but also the spirit i.e. team spirit.
You are right Jai. India also went for similar type of training with Indian army and they were unstoppable too. Nobody was able to stop them in westindies beyond first round
As per report Dave Whatmore's name is front runner if coach is foreigner and for Indian counterparts Ravi Shastri, Sandeep Patil and Mohindar Amarnath r considered ... Kapil Dev declined to be Indian coach but he suggested Gavaskar's name.
But I m doubtful about Gavaskar considering his other interests (commentary and heading ICC / BCCI committees) ... Wasim Akram believes Ravi Shastri will be great coach for Indian team ..

Jaydeep.
At this rate, this list of coaches could actually be a better team playing for India than trying to coach the current bunch We need only three more names.
How about putting "none of the above listed coaches" as one of the choices. Some day when I get time, I can give my reasons why I believe that none of the coaches mentioned would work well for the current set of players.
Addendum:
Once again, BCCI and other Indian sports officials look at matters with a narrow view rather than doing their homework. The foreign coaches mentioned as possible coaches for India are the ones that have done well in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, and although conditions in those two countries are quite similar to that in India, there is a big difference in many aspects. Indian team needs a coach that suits the Indian players best.

He has the experience of coaching the Indian U-19 team and so knows most of the current crop of youngsters. He himself was a player who made the most out of his limited ability. He was the kind of person who believed more in the Team than in Individual Glory when he was a player. Perfect example of fitness as well.
Some people may raise certain issue like we need a Proven performer for our great batsmen to give respect to the Coach's opinion, which again was cited as a reason for Chappel's selection over Moody but the result was there for all to see.
Alright guys latest news is that "GC would be made National Cricket Academy Consultant". Not bad. He can teach players how to BAT and still make lots of money. BCCI is rich, isn't it?
Good for the people who liked him( he will still get money, which matters more) and also good for the people who does not like him( like ME) since he won't be the coach of the team anymore.
We might want to have another poll related to who should become Indian captain.
