Depends upon how well they perform. If they blow out the opposition and are in really good form, then maybe they can get some more chances. But, if not, I'd go with Iyer and Vihari. My personal choice would be to go with the youngsters since this is SL at home.

We had two options. Either we bench the kid or we play him wherever a slot is available. We needed an opener and he was told he needs to open. He is not an opener but immediately agreed. These are also traits that you look in a cricketer," Delhi selector Chaitanya Nanda told PTI.


"You don't groom players by putting them in the bench. You have to play them. He is a No. 3 player and so opening isn't a bad option for him. Yes, he will have his failures and teams will start reading him better and more experienced first-class bowlers will have his measure.

I guess, playing him as a opener in first class is okay. We need him to dominate as opener at this level to do well as no3 or no4 batsman at intl level. He score a century in almost 150 balls (at 50+ overs).

Exactly Kumar. Also, in the Indian team in a year or two we will need openers. Rohit will retire soon or be injured. Rahul has hit a purple patch recently but he may not cut it. Then, Gill is shaky with technical issues. And, Mayank is great at home and greatly useless abroad. So, that may be a way for him to get in. I am assuming in the next year someone will put their hands up and grab the MO slots for a couple of years at least.

Let him play. Many people scored centuries in the first match this round. Pandey scored 156, Dogra 108, Kunnumal 105. So, no big deal. Can he be consistent is the question?

Having said that, the selectors obviously had under-rated him and over-rated some of the regular opener and #3s. Will be interesting to see how things go going forward.

Manish Pandey smashed 156. His name is always at the top in domestic cricket & A team performance chart, but he has failed to carry that in international arena. He was the most discussed cricketer then Virat in that 2008 U19 World Cup, had great start with IPL ton in SA and that Sydney ton in 2015 Aus series, but have failed with opportunity given to him, also got enough suppport from MSD & Virat.
He belong to those cricketers where expectation was high but turned out to be a surprising disappointment

Arguably, Manish was perhaps suited most for the biggest version of the game: tests. He was never given a chance.

In ODIs, Dhawan, Rohit, Rahul and Kohli have been staples. So basically one MO place was there at most two in the case of injuries. Initially, Kedar and Rayudu outperformed him although Rayudu was very slow. Arguably, he should have been preferred to Rayudu but Rayudu gave us more runs/innings. Then, came Iyer and now SAY. Both have performed better than him. So, he is out.

Sarfaraz Khan 275 today. So overall the guy has1 ton, 2 double ton and 1 triple ton. But the problem is domestic performances are not considered for test at present . You have to play IPL to get picked.

Dada was the last left hander to play 100 test as a middle order batsman( not keeper or allrounder).At present, doesnt see any quality middle order lefty in domestic for test cricket
