The league stage of the Ranji Trophy just got done. Mumbai needed a dose of luck which happened in the form of TN beating Baroda and made it to the knockout stage. Maharashtra needed to and beat Vidarbha to qualify. So that makes it three teams from the state of Maharashtra in the QF stage of the Ranji Trophy. Here are the qualifiers (IIRC it is 3+3+2):

Group A: Karnataka (group topper), TN and Mumbai.
Group B: Delhi, Maharashtra and Vidarbha
Group C: Assam and Andhra

J&K and Saurashtra have been relegated (I think).

Yes, those are the qualifiers. Bengal had a very poor season -- mainly because Manoj Tiwary was underwhelming (after some spectacular heroics in the two List A competitions), and just managed to avoid relegation. In the Piyush Chawla vs Karn Sharma showdown at the Railways' home stadium, Chawla got a five-for in the second innings (after making 73 with the bat in the first innings) to take UP to an outright victory (thus taking them from bottom of the table to above J&K and Bengal), while Karn Sharma went wicketless! Karn is not even used as the first-choice spinner by the Railways, bowling second or third-change in most innings (even the part-time spinner Arnab Nandi outbowled Karn in both the last two matches, as did RL Mali). Selecting him for India was an utter travesty!!!

Why are these at neutral venues? So that they will get an even smaller crowd than otherwise?

Yes, good question (which I have asked here in past years)!! Creating interest in domestic cricket seems absolutely no consideration at all for the BCCI. The idea is to create a more level playing field by playing at a neutral venue. But it almost completely eliminates the spectators.

Contrasting matches in progress at the neutral venues! In Lahli and Cuttack, absorbing low-scoring matches are on -- featuring Delhi vs Bombay in the latter, and Maharashtra vs Andhra in the former. Maharashtra are struggling on 74/4 at tea on the second day, after being bowled out for 91 and then bundling Andhra out for 138. And Delhi took a narrow 10-run first innings lead -- despite top-scorer Viru Sehwag being unfortunately run out for 49 -- and Bombay (156 all out in the first innings) are 16 for no loss in the second innings at tea on Day 2.

Mighty Karnataka made 452 (Uthappa 153, Rahul 91) against Division C champs Assam at Indore, and Tamil Nadu are 375/7 (Vijay 96, V Shankar 111, Indrajith 74*) in 150 overs against Vidarbha at Jaipur.

Maharashtra are through to the Ranji semifinal, winning by 75 runs against Andhra.

These are 5-day games, although that one finished in half the time. Karnataka didn't enforce the follow-on, and now lead by 404 runs with 8 second innings wickets in hand at the end of Day 3. Mumbai are fighting hard against Delhi (who took a 10-run first innings lead). They made 450 in the second innings, and have set Delhi a mammoth task to win outright -- or try to play out a draw over five sessions, and go through on first innings lead.

Is the Ranji SF played on minefield of a pitch. Mumbai were all out for a paltry 44 after bowling out Karnataka for 210 and Karnaraka are 10-2 in second inngs. 22 wkts in a day.

It appears to me that both TN and Mumbai do not have good teams but have somehow made it to the SF stage. The TN bowling attack has been ordinary -- imagine have Balaji who bowls around 120K leading the pace attack. Indrajith (Aparajith's twin brother) makes the team because Badri left (forced out?) for Vidarbha. So when Vijay is representing the country, the batting is heavily dependent Mukund with Aparajith having a poor season. Looks like the Ranji trophy is Karnataka's for the taking with TN looking to take the first innings lead against Maharashtra (I can't see TN take 20 Mah wickets).

Mumbai chasing 445 were going great guns at 198 for 2 and looking to have a chance for an improbable win. But, lost 4 wickets in a hurry and are 277-6 at stumps and now they are 168 runs away with 4 wkts in hand.

Second SF is moving at a snail pace. After 3 days, Maharashtra is just at the starting point of their innings at 110-1 against TN total of 549. Result seems unclear his at the moment although TN seems to have the edge having put the total on the board.

Mumbai are all out for 322 and Karnataka are thru to the finals.

In second SF, Maharashtra are going strong at 203-1 . So, that SF appears to be interestingly poised.

Maharashtra concedes a 95 run first innings lead to TN. TN has cruised to 107-0(Mukund 59*, Aparajith 46*). So it looks like TN vs Karnataka in the Ranji finals this year. I can't see TN beating Karnataka.

TN's lack of bowling shows up. Karnataka are cruising 323-5 after bundling out TN for 134. Karnataka is the best Ranji team in India by some margin. TN/Mumbai/Maharashtra need to come up with new talent if they are to compete next year.
