Sania has finally said that she will stop singles and focus only on Doubles
this was expected but still a little shocking too..coz in the beginning of the year she said she would concentrate on doubles only till Olympics and then would try to comeback in Singles..i really hoped her partner and best friend Mattek who has been getting so many WCs including USO will somehow inspire her to keep playing Singles..But she has clearly said she may play an occasional tournament or Fed cup in Singles..

Though it's right as she explains her body can no longer take it,as a huge fan its really hard for me to accept it..she was right saying that neither she or Mahesh/Leander can play forever, but did not want this to be so soon..now she is going to be like Raymond or someother doubles specialist..but i don't understand why she wants to partner Mattek if she fully wants to concentrate on Doubles?i hope she wins a few more slams before stopping.. :goodluck: Sania..

She has only one option left now 'RETIRE'.
When your not good enough for singles then you have to depend on others and you're done and dusted specially for a female tennis player from India. She has given up on singles but singles are priority No 1 for her doubles partners.

The Sun started setting on Sania's singles tournament play some years ago with her persistent injuries. I saw her playing qualifying at Rogers Cup last year, and it was a ragged performance. Got beaten by a journeyman player from Germany. I did not see any hope for a consistent come back to singles play based on that performance. I think that might have been her last serious attempt at resuming/resurrecting her singles career. Hopefully, we get to see her in doubles action for a few more years.

She was doing pretty well last year as late as the clay season, remember she beat Lisicki in Charleston. And then during the grass season or so, she lost her coach. I've always maintained that she drops a few levels every time she's coachless. And along with poor training comes a higher tendency to get injured. Li na was out for a whole year with a knee injury and still came back and won a slam a few years later. Sania doesn't have that kind of drive does she. Who knows, maybe she just maxed out her talent very early on. I don't believe she's blessed with soft hands for eg. I just thought she could have tried to bulk up more, like most of the other girls. Also don't know why she wants to or has to keep giving an account of herself to the media, ends up pigeon-holing herself.

Well said, anisha. She always ran into trouble whenever she was coachless. It was like she would then became a bit direction-less about what she was doing. Even if the directions from the coach were not necessarily the best, or were not what she liked, generally things worked to some extent with a coach around. That has been my feeling too, often. Jay

true enough, everytime when she was working with a coach, she performed well regardless she was playing singles, doubles or mixed. even when she was under rob steckley she was so so better. i feel sania has always took wrong decisions through out her career. if she would have hired a coach for full time basis she would have never got injured time and again. i have heard so many tennis greats/commentators saying sania has the weapons and power to match the likes of serena, sharapova etc from the back court and ofcourse that forehand was touted as one of the best and biggest forehand in women's tennis, what has happened now.
look at li na, she didn't performed well in a couple of tournaments earlier and took no time to hire carlos rodriguez, former justine henin coach something i wanted sania to do when henin retired and now she is all set to sideline her singles career, she has always underestimated her talent i believe.
