This was a gutsy win in the end, against a player she should have beaten more easily. Rodina is mainly a Challenger-level player (ie, she is comfortable in the type of tournament Sania is playing this week). She made the final of the Bratislava Challenger last month, so she is in form (and her ranking reflects it). But Rodina has just one victory over a top-100 player in 2010 -- albeit over Ana Chakvetadze, Sania's former nemesis, then merely ranked in the 60s. So, although Sania's artificially-low ranking makes this appear an upset win, I think Rodina is the type of player Sania would be beating quite comfortably when she is in form.
What I really like about Sania's play this week (and indeed in the USO qualifiers, Guangzhou WTA and Asiad) is that she is routinely digging deep enough to pull off victories over players she should be beating (in our eyes) although they are ranked higher than her currently. The comeback is looking very good indeed. The one problem area is the tendency to drop the second set after winning the first -- thus making matches unnecessarily close....But of course, she has also had some spectacular wins this week over much higher-ranked opponents. Excellent stuff overall!

The one problem area is the tendency to drop the second set after winning the first -- thus making matches unnecessarily close...
But this was always an issue with Sania. I think it is not that she relaxes in the second set. Rather, it is probably more because the opponents adjust a bit after getting totally dazed early in the first set, seeing her power shots and the go-for-broke style. I think she gets up a break or two early in her matches, probably almost 80% of the time - and it has been so all through her career. Many times the opponents start adjusting to her late in the first set itself, starts runing around retrieving things and staying back etc - and then the match gets tight in the second. That she has lately been finding ways to still stay ahead after the opponents adjust to her, is nice to see. When she was at the top of her game 3 years back, she was able to do that and was avoiding dropping the second and third sets - but over the last couple of years she was losing spirit and losing quite often after being up early. She seems to have got back some of the confidence to stay in there and win the match, may be making a few adjustments herself too.

One other thing is that it was when she needed to adjust her own game a bit and start using her defensive shots, loops, volleys etc that her wrist was giving her more trouble in the past. The power shots were always done with superb timing and body balance and they were never jarring her wrist. This was true probably about her power first serve too. But the adjustment shots or second serve were different. She would hit one mistimed shot and the wrist could start acting up - and then she would lose all confidence in fighting back. Touchwood, but for now, things look better.

Though she struggled from mid second set still Sania played gutsy game to finished match in decider after trading multiple breaks.

Sania and Uhlirova lost doubles final in close match against 2nd seed Goerges and Martic, so chance of double crown is over.

At $75K Dubai ITF Womens Tournament, UAE

Doubles
[F] (1) Sania Mirz (IND)/ Vladimira Uhlirova (CZE) l (2) Julia Goerges (GER)/ Petra Martic (CRO) 46 67(7)

I m really hoping Sania lift singles title beating this 19 yrs old Serbian.

[F] Sania Mirz (IND,165) vs (5) Bojana Jovanovski (SRB,81)

Terrific run by Sania here. Final will be very tough for Sania as she is 0-2 in head to head against Bojana & she has lost both these matches witin last 6 months. So, Bojana will have the edge.

This is the article on yesterday's win -

Sania has been the underdog in every one of her matches, but has come through in the end. The final will indeed be especially tough, but I am hopeful that she will do something special in front of her "home away from home" fans.
