Nicha Lertpitaksinchai should be easy for Sania. Nicha is still playing juniors and is just 17 years old. IIRC, she won a junior tournament last year in India (not much competition though). Go Sania

but, the 2nd round is going to be tough as she could face Dominica Cibulkova, who's had a good Aus Open recently.

Cibulkova is the kind of retrieving, never-say-die player who is tough for Sania to play. The ball will keep coming back. A big ask for Sania at this point in her comeback.....

At $220K PTT Pattaya Women's Open, Thailand

[R1] MIRZA, Sania IND d. (WC) LERTPITAKSINCHAI, Nicha THA 76(4) 75

This was a forgettable match for Sania against lowly ranked junior. She saved set points at 4-5 in both the sets to win . Her serve looks to have worsened as she was broken 5 times even against the teenager. Only positive is she came back from 4-5 , 30-40 down to win the next 11 points to win the match.
She has to play much better then this against Cibulkova.

First round.... can't say much abt it. Even Yuki had a forgetable first round in Australian Open.

Hope Sania picks it up from here.....

Yes, very shocking stats of the match ... Surprisingly had a long match of 1 hr and 52 mins ... Sania had 18 break point chances and converted 6 but Lertpitaksinchai also had 9 break point chances and she converted 5 ... Sania struggled with her serve as 1st serve percentage was 51% ... Need to play more controlled and solid game in next rounds.

Very bad :-(

May be due to the muscle injured during AO

Going through the posts, I thought she lost the match. I'll take a win no matter what the score line is. It's a first round match and they are always tough especially when you are playing a local girl.

This is what Sania said about yesterday' match -
“She didn’t play like she is 945. She hit like she is in the top 50,” Sania said. “It’s always difficult to play with someone you don’t know in the first round. But I’m happy to raise my level and pulled through.”

Perhaps, it was a mix of both - the local girl raised her game considerably in this match & Sania was a bit off color in her first match since Aus open.

She will play her doubles match today.

Mostly 3rd seed Cibulkova is out due to injury as currently match is going on between Russian qualifier Vitalia Diatchenko and Japanese lucky-loser Ryoko Fuda ... So tomorrow in the second round Sania will face winner of these two.

Also Sania's doubles partner Mara Santangelo retired from her singles match so not sure about her doubles status in later of the evening.

[QF] (3) Sania Mirza (IND)/ Mara Santangelo (ITA) vs Elena Bovina (RUS)/ Ksenis Pervak (RUS)

Good to see Mara played doubles with Sania ... So easy win against Russian pair in 69 minutes. Today Sania's singles second round match is last on Court 2.
