A new subforum created to discuss Sania Mirza. As a lot of the other tennis player threads were getting overloaded, thus a new forum to discuss Sania Mirza

There are actually only 2 weeks of WTA level tournaments play left after this week. Then, there in only year ending championships which Sania will not be able to play. So, instead of going to Europe only for a couple of weeks , she decides to take a longish 2 months break which is fine.

Two weeks is not too "short" for a tennis player to make a trip. I think she wants to take a longer break. Maybe she just wants to spend some time with her husband  .

Sania's interview -

Looking forward to my partnership with Cara Black: Sania Mirza
Indian Tennis Players Association (ITPA) shared it's plans for the next one year to enhance the performance of players on tour in 2014, which includes providing a physiotherapist and a fitness trainer through the year.

"Today we had an executive committee meeting and we have chalked out the plan for the next 12 months. First step is to find ways to enhance players who are playing on tour this year or rather 2014 help them out. One of the things we are going to do is get them a physiotherapist and a fitness trainer to travel with them through the year," the Association's vice-president Mahesh Bhupathi said.
"The second is mentoring junior. The third is having events such as this to not only raise funds but also find what is going to get ITPA to be able to do what we want to, also support all these players and all these juniors that we kind of want to mentor," the veteran said adding that they also have plans for training camps
That is a good initiative by ITPA but not sure how they will manage it for all the players with different schedules.

This is great. If they keep doing this, I will be a fan. I was a skeptic initially and I would be glad to be proven wrong.

So, they don't have funds but have ideas such as having a physiotherapist and fitness coach for traveling players? How much did this event raise?

Hardly a reason to turn into a fan of the ITPA yet, IMO.

Still seems an ego match to me but it is better if players' ego are in control rather than the mostly good for nothing administrators. As long as moms/dads/uncles/aunts are not made the officials/managers/coaches of the players.

Sania tweeted that she has headed for Australia. She's starting the season either in Hobart or Sydney(which one? - I'm not sure)

Sania won her 8th Asiad gold medal today -- and her second Gold (in MxD, adding to the 2006 MxD Gold). It was her FOURTH Asiad medal in Mixed Doubles (bronze in 2002 when she was 15, silver in 2010). In 2006, she also won two silvers (women's team, and women's singles), and in 2010 she won a bronze for women's singles.
What an absolutely stellar, trailblazing record of achievement :notworthy:

Late reply to PKB's comment (I was traveling for a whole week). Totally agree with that. I still remember her first medal with LP, back in 2002. She is one of the youngest people to ever get an Asiad medal, and she continues to come through for us. Simply tremendous.

[By the way, is she the youngest-ever medalist in Asiad history? If not, how close in age is she to the whoever the record holder is, I wonder....)

Jay

PS: All the people who were bad mouthing her so much here, (IMHO) for the sole reason that she married a Pakistani, hopefully take her for what she is, at least now. An Indian patriot to the core.

Interesting news about the new coach........
Sania also revealed that she has decided to hire doubles specialist coach Paul McNamee, who incidentally coaches her new partner, China’s Su-Wei Hsieh

Good to see Sania is aiming high before thinking about retirement.

I would like to be number one before I retire: Sania Mirza

She seems to be the most matured of the lot. Speaks smartly, plays smartly and yes has ambitious but doable plans.

Check this interview also.

Leander and I would be the best team to pair up for Rio Olympics: Sania
- 'I don’t think playing singles is possible for me any more. Physically tennis is a very demanding sport.'

- 'On paper, Leander and I would be the best to team to pair up for the Rio Olympics.'

- 'IPTL is going to help tennis grow in India.'

This part of the interview is very disappointing from Sania :damn:
No. I don’t think playing singles is possible for me any more. Physically, tennis is a very demanding sport. I was fortunate to have a very successful singles career and play for eight years. I am also aware that our genes are not as strong as the people in the west; we are not able to match them in terms of the strength and agility. Also, we don’t have proper facilities and get the right training, which makes a huge difference.
What a bunch of :kookoo: How does that explain how the Chinese girls like LiNa/tiny JieZheng/Shuai Peng did so well this year? How does she not have the "proper facilities and right training" when she's rolling in cash. I'm happy for her for achieving something in doubles but it's time to stop thinking about excuses and her public image and the media and get back to the major league. It's also funny how she says "Grand Slams" but doesn't qualify it with the word Doubles.
