Hero Honda Masters

Post by ajay »

Big time golf is back in India and all top Indian stars are looking forward to win at home turf.
Here is what Jeev has to say (see Hindustan Times )
Coming to this year’s event, I think I have a good chance as I have been playing well for the past couple of months. I don’t have a good finish to prove it, but that’s because I have been having one bad round every tournament.

Last week, I was tied sixth going into the final day of the ABC Championship in Japan, but finally finished 22nd after a disappointing two-over round. However, I have full faith in my abilities and I am pretty confident of posting some good finishes in the very near future... hopefully this week itself.

--Jeev
Jeev also realizes his problems of having one bad round in a tournament. As we have also been following him, he does seem to be playing good except that one round. If he can avoid that, he can certainly have good result. Note that Jeev and Jyoti were playing against much tougher opposition in JPGA compare to what they'll face here.

Arjun Atwal is looking for first player to win life time million dollars in APGA as he is sitting at $ 969,902 before this event. Shona Singh of Indian Express has to say this about Arjun Atwal (Here is the link)
Arjun, who is also hitting the ball long and straight, homed in with a driver and seven iron onto the par-five 14th hole today. He is very relaxed and prepared to lead the field as the number one player on the current Asian Order of Merit. ‘‘This is one of my favorite courses and I love coming back here. That is one of the reasons I am back,’’ said the amicable young professional who has appraised the nine new greens that have been added to the course. ‘‘They are big greens, hard and fast,’’ he said

Very interesting to see the former cricketer Kapil Dev at one over par 73 -- second among amateurs (albeit 4 strokes behind the Amateur leader Vikrant Chopra). Kapil could obviously be a contender for the next Asian Games golf team.

Good showing by Indians (as always when a tournament is in India)
Jeev played a par second round 72 and still heads the leaderboard (at -6)just by a single stroke. The best rounds of the day were 68 (-4) by few golfers. If Jeev wants to win this tournament, he should make a move to open up the lead on third day as quiet a few players are on his heel.

I hope he remains consistent in this tournament and end his winless draught of four years.
Go Jeev!

Arjun Atwal T5 closed the gap slightly with a round of 71(-1) and he is just two stroke away at -4 from Jeev. At this stage Arjun Atwal may be more confident than Jeev to win this tournament. Arjun is trying to be first to reach the milestone of $ 1 million lifetime money on APGA. Go Arjun!

I read somewhere that Jyoti is playing with some pain in his arm/shoulder. But still he is also at striking distance at -3, just three shots away from the top.

Jyoti's cousin Digvijay made a move today with a round of 68(-4) to reach T2 position at -5. Vijay Kumar, last year winner of an APGA event maintained his T2 spot at -5 with a round of 71(-1)

Ajay

ps:Kapil Dev missed the cut today by two strokes.

Jeev looks to be in magnificent form, although Arjun Atwal is closing the gap.
Sad that Kapil Dev just missed the cut by two strokes after a poor 77 (5 over par) in the second round. But only two amateurs finished ahead of him (both just making the cut), and Kapil did much better than some of the erstwhile heavyweights of Indian golf like Vikramjit Singh and Rohtas Singh (who are probably not much older than him; Kapil is officially 45, and maybe a bit older!).

Consistency is something that has always plagued Jeev's career. He can be brilliant one day but opposite other day. He need to show the brilliant form of first day at least twice in a tournament plus couple of decent round to have a chance to win a tournament. He came short today as he scored one over par round (73) today. There were too many people close to him and they just got ahead of him. He is now tied at 6th spot. He must show the magic of first day to be in contention again.

Digvijay SINGH again repeated their 2nd day performance of 68 (-4) and took the pole position at -9. His illustrious brother-in-law Jyoti Randhawa was not far behind with his round of 68(-4) and took the tied 2nd spot on the leaderboard at -7, two strokes behind leader.
Gary Rusnak of USA is the other player tied at 2nd spot, who is trying to challenge the Indians. He played a super round of 65 (-7) today. He is an established player on APGA tour and he will be a real threat tomorrow.

Arjun Atwal continued to play another steady round of 70 (-2) and he is placed T4 at -6, tied with another foreigner Rafael PONCE (ECU), just three strokes behind the leader. This is the picture that I have about Arjun Atwal. He will continue to play steady rounds, nothing spectacular, but by third day or so he'll be up on the leaderboard and in contention.

Next T6 at -5, we have Jeev along with Unho PARK (Aus) and another APGA veteran Anthony KANG (USA)

After third day, on the first three spots we have 4 Indians out of 8. Yesterday we had 6 Indians out of 7. Hopefully, Indians will continue to prevail on homeground.

Basu, as you obseved, Kapil is a decent golfer especially as an amateur. If he played seriously, he could have competed well at this level. Kapil also played as Amater this year at Dunhill Links Champiomship. We did discuss his name at that time. (see thread Dunhill Links)

I don't remember correctly, but wasn't Rohtas Singh a gold medalist in Asiad?

ajay, I think Rohtas Singh won a medal at the Asiad but not the gold. I believe Laxman Singh won the gold at the 1982 Asiad in Delhi. I know Kapil Dev is a very good golfer. An acquaintance of mine is the Golf secretary at the Tollygunge Club in Kolkata; Kapil organises his golf games at the Club many weeks before arriving in the city, and is religiously devoted to improving his game. It's good to see just how good he has become.
Garry Sobers, the great West Indies cricketer, also became a serious golfer after he retired and briefly considered turning pro.

Thanks BSharma.
I think we should have someone trace the history of Indian Golf. I've been following the current golf but I don't know too much about the past. Although, the history will basically trace the recent past only as Golf is just taking roots in India, but it'll be good to list out the achivements of Indian players and milestones in Indian Golf.

Ajay, I have started a new thread about the history of Indian Golf. Some day when Dhruv has time to redesign the forum he can put the history of all Indian sports in a separate category.
