Hero Honda Masters

Post by PKBasu »

Arjun Atwal is slowly establishing himself as the leading Indian golfer. He won the Hero Honda Masters today, and thus became the first man with career earnings of US$1 million on the Asian PGA tour. He will probably also win the Asian Order of Merit this year. After his win in the Malaysian Open (an EPGA cum APGA event), where he beat the likes of Retief Goosen, Arjun's victory today cements his place as the current Asia #1, just ahead of last year's #1 Jyoti Randhawa.
Here's the report from rediff:

Jeev sadly succumbed again to his old affliction: the inability to sustain his form over 4 rounds.

Well done Arjun Atwal. This win couldn’t have come at better time as I hope he’ll carry this confidence to the PGA qualifier (2nd stage) next week. And looks like he'll finally finish #1 on APGA. Go Arjun!

Jyoti was also not far behind as he put up a good show too. He was close to a playoff when he missed his putt that lipped out on 18th.

Reading the reports it seems the course was tough. Probably, Jeev didn't play that badly as it may seem. He needed some luck as he just couldn't put together another low round after a spectacular first round. Looking at the winning score of -7 and remembering that Jeev had -6 on the first day, I’ll just say bad luck. In fact according to Jeev he was striking the ball better on second day but puts won't go in. He may not be at his best but he is playing good golf now a days. The problem is that he raises expectation so high that even a good finish in a tournament seems not that good. But in ultimate analysis, he is still shy of winning a tournament in recent days. I hope soon he'll put everything together at a bigger stage, probably JPGA and end his winless streak.

Here is a link to another reportat APGA site.

Congratulations Arjun Atwal for winning the Hero Honda Masters tournament. It is good to see that the Indians have owned this tournament :D .

He will most likely win the Asian PGA Tour Order of Merit crown for 2003 and will be eligible to play in the American Express Golf Championship in 2004.

That day may be sooner than later. I'm hoping for a Christmas/New Year type timeline for a test site for comments :) but obviously it depends how much time I have.

Gaurav Ghei has been a big disappointment relative to the promise he showed as a teenager. If I remember right, he was close to the top of Indian amateur golf by the time he was 16, and qualified for the British Open when he was just over 20. But he has simply not made the big impact that Atwal, Randhawa and Chiranjeev have made...perhaps because he has been more reticent about playing on overseas tours. Perhaps a financial constraint? (I think Atwal and Randhawa come from very affluent backgrounds).

Gaurav Ghei played quiet regularly in APGA till last year when he lost his card narrowly as he finished 64 and only top 60 retain their card. So he did get opportunities but could not make use of it.
