Volvo China Open - First Round

Post by ajay »

Seven Indian players are taking part in Volvo China Open. Except Arjun Singh, all other are fighting to retain their APGA card. Their performance on first day is as follows:

T37 Uttam Singh MUNDY 73 (+1)
T37 Vijay KUMAR 73 (+1)
T47 Firoz ALI 74 (+2)
T47 Mukesh KUMAR 74 (+2)
T62 Harmeet KAHLON 75 (+3)
T79 Arjun SINGH 76 (+4)
T88 Amritinder SINGH 77 (+5)

Every one shot above par :(.

Zhang Lian-wei of China is trying to catch up with Arjun atwal for APGA Order of Merit title. The winner gets $90,000. Currently Zhang is behind by $127K. Zhang is quiet capable player and if he wins the title, the difference will be mere $37K. Zhang made a good start as he leads the leaderbord with -5. Top few players on the leaderboard are:

ZHANG Lian-wei CHN 67 -5
Angelo QUE PHI 67 -5
Danny ZARATE PHI 67 -5
Thaworn WIRATCHANT THA 68 -4
HONG Chia-yuh TPE 68 -4
Adam FRASER AUS 68 -4

We'll follow Zhang in this tournament. I hope on final day someone will beat him.

The cut was applied at top 70 and ties at Volvo Open and top 60 and ties at JPGA. Interestingly all the Indians who entered in an International event this week made the cut. The seven Indian players in Volvo along with Jyoti and Jeev in JPGA are now playing in the weekend rounds.

Zhang wins the Volvo China Open with a lead of 2 strokes. At one time (after 12th hole) Zhang was leading by 5 strokes, but suddenly he found himself leading just by one stroke. But he held on his nerves and won the top prize of $90,000. With less than $37,000 seprating him, he is now a strong contender challenging Arjun Atwal's so far supremacy on the order of Merit (OOM) race. The top three in OOM race are:

1 Arjun ATWAL (IND) 282,193.58 6
2 ZHANG Lian-Wei (CHN) 245,569.58 4
3 Thongchai JAIDEE (THA) 138,786.69 8

The Indian crowd finished with the following score.

T20 Vijay KUMAR 73 73 72 71 ( 1 )
T28 Uttam Singh MUNDY 73 71 74 73 ( 3 )
T32 Harmeet KAHLON 75 70 73 74 ( 4 )
T46 Mukesh KUMAR 74 72 75 74 ( 7 )
T50 Amritinder SINGH 77 66 73 80 ( 8 )
T50 Arjun SINGH 76 70 74 76 ( 8 )
T69 Firoz ALI 74 74 80 78 ( 18 )

Next week APGA moves to Taiwam for Acer Cup. If Zhang plays there, he'll have a chance to catch op with Arjun Atwal. After Acer Cup, two more APGA events are to follow for the 2003 season.

The second round was continued on third day. Jeev finished his round on the third day. It was very windy and tough conditions. Most of the people carded high scores. The current leader Jason Dawes was probably lucky as he finished his round on day 2 itself. So Jeev's 80 may not be as bad as it seem, but and many others did much better. As far as the advantage of first round 65 is lost. Jeev is 7 stroke behind leader. Third round is not over yet and it has moved to 4th day.

Acer Taiwan Open

Post by ajay »

Didn't get time to update the final results earlier. Just for completion, I'm updating the final results for Acer Taiwan Open. As most of you already know that Jeev finished 2nd here. Harmeet Kahlon had an opportunity to finish in top 10, but 3rd performance of 86 in gust wind let him down.

Code: Select all

POS	PLAYER R1	R2	R3	R4	+/-	PRIZE(US$)

2 Jeev Milkha SINGH 65	80	77	70	(4)	33,090.00
20	Vijay KUMAR 71	81	78	74	(16)	3,600.00
21	Amandeep JOHL 69	81	77	78	(17)	3,465.00
27	Harmeet KAHLON 71	75	86	76	(20)	2,745.00

Amritinder Singh (76, 80) missed the cut.
Arjun Singh retired after a first round score of 75

I was wondering why Jyoti is not playing Asian/Euro jointly sanctioned Omega Hong Kong Open , where many of the European stars will be playing. I found that Jyoti is booked to play JPGA year ending GOLF NIPPON SERIES, which has very small and restricted entry. I'm thinking Jyoti must have received invitation as he has been the rookie of the year in JPGA tour.

With Arjun Atwal missing this tournament due to PGA qualifiers, Indian Flag will be carried by Vijay Kumar, Harmeet Khalon, Arjun Singh, and Amandeep Johl. I hope one of them rises to the big occasion to bring some cheers from this tournament.
